    A Grande Experience

We have stayed at this hotel many times, and find the review posted previous to ours hard to believe. The owner is a Cordon Bleu chef, and the meals are magnificent. (No fast food here!) The rooms, while small in the European style, are each individually designed by the owners and spotless. The building is several hundred years old, as are many others in the center city of La Charite, where the code prevents modernization. The streets are tiny, and the entire town from old monastic walls to its museum is easily walkable.

    Best avoided

Due to overbooking of our original hotel, we had little choice but to stay here for one night. On arrival we had to choose our breakfast for the next day, including beverages and anything extra not included in the 11 euro per person price of breakfast. Such luxurious "extras" included an egg! We were then shown to our 130 euro per night room which whilst acceptably clean was old in a thoroughly charmless way. Clearly hasn't had a makeover since the 70's! All public areas were also extremely grubby and in urgent need of a serious blitz! All in all, not a pleasant place to stay in an otherwise gorgeous area of France.

    Period Chic to be savoured

This hotel was something of a surprise. Room decorated in the grand style with a view over the river. All mod cons except working wifi (owner not quite with it in this respect). Great chef provided an excellent dinner in the restaurant with a view over the river. Not cheap, and La Charite is abit run down, but a useful stop for my last night in France this year. Could make a good "romantic" place to stay for a while.

    Check your costs

We have stayed at perhaps 100 hotels in France, some good some bad, but this was the only time we actually felt ripped off. We were quoted 94E for the room when booked through the Tourist information people who phoned the hotel. We sere billed for 110E. Dinner was a 29E set menu that included fillet steak. We were served rather inferior entrocote, with no change to the cost. Wine was listed at 3E by the glass, but billed at 4E Breakfast was arranged at dinner. Coffee was not included. Breakfast was billed at twice the listed price, not including the coffee which was extra. It also was priced as a buffet, but consisted only of a mean continental breakfast. I guess that bit was our mistake. I do not have enough French to challenge the bill, so just paid.

    Do not go

Do not go here! It is far to expensive for what you get and very unhospitable. Ofcourse it could be romantic and has potential, but then for half the price and with friendly staff. So stay away. We were unlucky and had to look for a room the very last moment, but will never go there again.
