Authentic Italian experience! Some negatives outweighed by many positives!

I agree with some of the other reviews that say the decor is tired and the many weddings and functions are a little inconvenient especially if you get your car parked in (and I presume this is why the pool hours are only 8am to 12pm because I assume the pool area is used for the weddings - we didn't go up there when the weddings were on). However (and this is a big however!).... 1. The staff are incredible and they will ensure you are never inconvenienced in any way. We rescued our car from being parked in on the day of the first wedding but I have no doubt the amazing porter would move heaven and earth to get you your car when you need it. 2. The food is authentic and incredible. Just as good as any of the fancy restaurants we went to. Great prices and they bend over backwards to make you happy. 3. The location would be awful if you don't have a hire care and the roads to get there are a little scary (mainly because our sat Nav insisted on taking us the worst ways possible) but if you have a car it is THE BEST LOCATION IN THE WORLD! The view is incredible, it's quiet, it's authentic and it's only 20-30 minutes from the closest main town and the Pompei ruins. It was 40-60 minutes from memory to incredible places like Sorrento, Naples and all of the great towns along the Amalfi coast. One of our best days was driving to Ravello, along the coast to Amalfi, Praiano, Positano and Sorrento and then back to the hotel. Even the drive to the hotel is awesome. So many authentic views and scenes to take in and you really experience the "community". 4. The grounds are actually quite stunning and beautifully maintained. 5. You will more than likely have the place to yourself a lot. We enjoyed the pool alone most days (aside from wedding days but we were out and about on those days anyway and the weddings end quite early). And when you do have the hotel to yourself, the staff will ask you "what time would you like breakfast tomorrow?" And work around your schedule! 6. Service is second to none (despite the language barrier). Use your phone and the wifi to look up words if you need to! They will do this as well - and always with a smile and a laugh. 7. The wifi isn't awesome and it gets overloaded very quickly but just wait it out while all the Italians realise it's crappy and disconnect to go back to their own networks and you get it back again haha! 8. Price! You couldn't get half a day at the local Hilton for what you pay for bed and breakfast at La Canonica. All in all we loved our stay! Yes there are negatives that anywhere else I would leave an awful review for but the staff, service, grounds and the authentic location more than make up for these! Don't stay here if you don't like hard beds though! I hate hard beds but to be honest, I had constant back pain during our previous 4 weeks in Europe thanks to beds I'm just not used to and these hard beds at La Canonica completely sorted that out. So all is well that ends well! For the price you can't complain at all! Like I said, there are negatives that you will get over when you interact with staff and use the facilities that you love. If you're the type that can't get over simple things like decor, hard beds, dodgy wifi and weddings (that mostly they won't allow to inconvenience you) then don't stay here. The lovely staff at La Canonica deserve guest who appreciate them for who they are and what they offer :) Well done, La Canonica! You contributed beautifully to our authentic holiday. We loved you, your coast and your Italian culture as a whole. Could not have been better in our opinion!

    Only recommendable on week days

This place is mainly an event venue. So the hotal can be full on one night and almost empty the next day, even in August. We experienced just that during our three nights stay. On the sunday night of our arrival, the parking was full because of 4 different events. As you may know (or will experience) Italians (not all) can be very loud and like to put music at a level I would not consider reasonable. After a long day on the road we wanted to have diner on site but were anoyed by the noise level. The monday morning was a complete other experience because the hotel had something like 4 or 5 familes and we had the pool for ourselves! The pool and the view are truly fantastic. Important information: the pool and terrasses are only accessible if no event is planned. Otherwise only accessible from 9 am to noon (and a bit earlier as we experienced). Please note that our family room had view on the Vesuve and see but was next to one the event's terrasse so I guess can be very noisy if a wedding is taking place. Please also note that to get such a view over the Vesuve, you need to drive uphill on twisted roads which is an experience in itself. If you visit Naples area, be prepare to some bad driving. We did a 3 weeks trip around Italy and Sicily, and in Naples they are the more "intense" drivers.

Best view of Napoli and Vesuvius

The hotel is hidden in the moluntains in the tiny city of Lettere, we suggest you to turn off the GPS and just follow the signs to Lettere, otherwise you will be sent through extremely narrow streets and alleys, fortunately we had a tiny car, so we could fit, any car bigger as a midsize would have faced trouble. This hotel is mainly running on wedding parties etc. it´s location in the mountains is beautiful and the views over Napoli and the Vesuvius are stunning. The rooms are bit old and the airco only works if all outside windows are closed well (sensors) since the windows and sensors are a bit old, we had trouble getting the airco running at first, but the handy man of the hotel could fix it finally (after 3 visits to our room) There is a fridge in the room, but not working, when asked to make it work, we found that it´s more like an oven than a fridge, so we stopped using it. The wifi is also inside the rooms very unstable and it´s only strong when in the restaurant or hallways. The first day we could use the pool only until 12.00 noon, due to a wedding party, fortunately the rest of the days we could use the pool, which is on a top deck terrace with stunning views. Breakfast is included, but every day it´s different, one day it was a huge buffet, and the next it was just average. We stayed there 5 nights, as we moved from another place (due to no airco) and eventhough its not very conveniently located if you plan to visit the Amalfi coast, for 1 or 2 days it´s a great stay.

    Stunning hotel

Very relaxing stay, some days we had the pool to ourselves but the choice of food let this hotel down. They seem to concentrate on weddings far more than the holiday guests! It was very hard to get transport from the village which didnt have much going on. If I went again, I would make sure that we had our days planned with trips away from the village as it is hard to stroll around and find things to do!

    Mixed reviews

My boyfriend and I stumbled across this place due to a last minute cancellation of a hotel which was derelict! So we started off in a negative state! Thankfully La canonica could fit us in but this was a little difficult with no one able to speak English well. Anyway due to it being a last minute booking we didnt do our research too well and turns out their main source of income is weddings so other hotel guests are pretty unimportant to them. As other reviews state, the pool is open till 12, but this means the whole terrace and chill out area too, meaning there is no where outside to chill at all. Basically get out of the hotel. We have a wedding . This was not communicated with us and therefore very inconvenient as these were our last few days of our hotel, meant for chilling. The local area has nothing to do. So plan day trips maybe for the afternoon so you can use the pool and then get out. When you can use the terrace, the views are stunning and its a very beautiful location. Hotel rooms need updating, very old school, dated, fridge does not work, bathrooms just need updating too. Breakfast very basic and coach loads of people eating all of it early before heading on their day trip so little left for us. Dinner was amazing though. Wine could do with being upgraded to accompany the lovely dinner. The weddings are loud so be prepared for that but they dont go on to late. Rubbish signal and WiFi. I would recommend this place if you wanted to explore the Naples region. Pompeii and mount.v not far. Also boat trips from sorrento to explore Capri and Amalfi
