Exceptionally hospitable, and well-located, "family-style" chalet

I am not generally a five-star rater. I'm giving La Belle Etoile 5 stars because, despite some issues with the facilities, the warmth and helpfulness of everyone on staff -- from the managers Erica and Mariano on down -- overcame the negatives and left us feeling exceptionally well taken care of. My wife and I plus our two adult children booked adjoining rooms last minute for a four day ski trip. I contacted the hotel directly via email and phone and got a very affordable rate that included breakfast and dinner. Communication was great, and included phone calls back from Mariano to confirm details on transportation to Les Deux Alpes from Grenoble. (Traveler tip: the French ski vacation is typically Saturday to Saturday. If you are not on this schedule you may find it harder to book a room.) The hotel itself is well-located, with everything you need close by, and a five minute walk away from "Diablo" chairlift, which is good way to access the mountain. The rooms are basic and clean, but dated and small -- even by European standards. We ended up leaving our medium sized suitcases in the rooms' entry corridors because there was little space anywhere else. Beds were comfortable. Bathrooms were cramped, but again this is not unusual in France. Breakfast and dinner were served in a comfortable and chatty dining room downstairs. ( Breakfast included buffet and made-to-order eggs. Dinner was buffet plus a choice of two entrees. The food is Italian rather than French, as are the owners/managers. There's plenty of it and it's good enough. (Go out if you want fine dining -- honestly, there isn't much of that in Les Deux Alpes anyway.) There's a nice small bar and sitting area here too, as well as a pool table which was fun to use. Downstairs is a jacuzzi and sauna which you may have to book in advance. There was a ping-pong table somewhere too. The clientele was family (and dog!) oriented, which we enjoyed. What really endeared La Belle Etoile to me was the quality of service we got from everyone. My wife and daughter came down with bad cases of gastroenteritis on arrival (not picked up at the hotel). The staff went out of their way to provide needed "supplies and cleaning" for the room, plus special food when my wife and daughter were able to eat again. Recommendations for restaurants, ski rental, taxi service back to Grenoble -- anything else we inquired about -- were all excellent and well-priced. The managers Mariano and Erica were visible, available, and helpful every day. In fact, I gave Erica a peck on each cheek when I left because I felt so grateful for their genuine hospitality. I have one major complaint and that's the wi-fi. It's an atrocious system, requiring constant re-logging in for every device and poor coverage in the hotel. Mariano is planning on changing it. In fact a major renovation and expansion of the hotel is planned for 2021. In the meantime, if you really think you may need to get work done, this might not be the place for you. Despite reservations about the room size and wi-fi, I think La Belle Etoile is very good value for money. It's the gracious and hospitable service we received from the entire staff, however, that made our stay exceptional. It's one that I will remember with fondness -- and how often can you say that about a hotel at any price?

Fantastic hotel for your skiing holidays

We (my daughter and I) spent 5 days there in Dec 2019 and it was by far the best skiing hotel we've stayed in. All components of ideal ski holidays - clean comfortable rooms, superb food, cake waiting for you after skiing, sauna and jacuzzi to relax after skiing, close to the lifts (5 mins walk) , own and free car park and most importantly very friendly staff. Also a great value for money in December, before Xmas. There is nothing I would change, food was great (Italian but who does not like the Italian cuisine), variable and plenty , a great selection of superb wines, a nice small bar for a drink after skiing. Booking directly with the hotel was also very simply and efficient. We'll be back next year. Many thank for you hospitality. Anita and Janusz

    Loved our stay

Just returned from a week at this small & very friendly hotel, ideally situated, just off the circular traffic thoroughfare, just a 5 minute walk in ski boots to the Diable ski lift to get you up the mountain. We benefited from a 1st floor room (with Juliet balcony) just over the hotel entrance, with very nice mountain views, spacious enough for the week, bathroom & shower stall a tad small, but sufficient. The hotel, is slightly dated, but dont let the old charm put you off, no traffic noise, very comfortable beds, enjoy the hospitality & the cuisine. Very friendly hotel staff (Italian owned, managed & staffed) it appears. Buffet breakfast, eggs cooked to order. Apres ski, cake & juice/water await you late afternoon, the bar is open for coffee or beer Evening meal not served till 19:30 Italian themed delicacies, buffet selection & soup, a 1st & 2nd course (choose your 2 from 2 the night before) & dessert, I enjoyed every meal, was never hungry. Friday night is slightly different (no spoilers) and no complaints from me, a culinary delight, Bravo to the chefs & waiting staff. Sauna & Jacuzzi can be booked for a 40 min slot, a gym for the die hards, treadmill, weights & spin bikes, but I was taking my exercise on the slopes. A lockable ski cave for skis & boots There is WiFi (its not that good) My 2nd visit to Les Deux-Alpes, its a really enjoyable resort, if I come back, i wouldnt hesitate to book this hotel again. we had fresh snow on our last night

Ski Holiday - a little Italian gem in Les 2 Alpes

My family and I have just returned from a superb time at this hotel and I felt compelled to provide a review. All of the staff are amazing and so friendly. Nothing was too much trouble. We were half board and there was copious amount of really good Italian food. The cake and drink after skiing every day was a lovely addition. Its fair to say that the bedrooms are a little basic but they are kept very clean and lots of hot water. They were cleaned daily and towels changed so no complaints from us. Their kindness and help when my husband badly injured himself whilst skiing on our last day was above and beyond anything I have ever experienced - even to the extent that they collected us from the medical centre because my husband could not walk and made sure we had everything we needed that night including food and drink in our room - the hotel manager even gave us her private number in case we needed her during the night. A majority of the staff are Italian and most speak extremely good English. This little gem of Italy in Les 2 Alpes is somewhere we will definitely book again for our next skiing trip. Thank you from The Philpott Family x
