    FRYING TONIGHT?

To say that Topolcany is off the beaten track would be, well, an understatement. But this is what travel is all about, washing up on an unfamiliar shore (although not a good metaphor because Slovakia is landlocked). But Topolcany has had its moments, or moment, when it hosted the world youth table tennis championships in 1997. As a result of this it acquired some new infrastructure, including a wide stretch of road that runs right by the hotel and is busy (it also got twin escalators to the bus station underpass that were closed immediately after the sports event and now stand as covered ski slopes, a testament to bureaucratic ineptitude). The town also has a dark history of Jewish deportation during the Second World War and, worse, a pogrom against returning Jews who survived. It is an onerous legacy to live with and there is a certain heaviness about the town. But a new generation of Slovaks are confronting the past and building for the future and a great arts project called Platform 1-12 (Nastupiste 1-12) is evidence of this. It is worth making a detour to pay a visit to this alone. OK, Hotel Koruna. A cross between an apartment and a room, my accommodation was on the top floor and the combination of sun beating down on the roof and through the large windows meant that by the afternoon, we had an oven. The heat was unbearable long into the night. And with the busy highway outside, opening the windows was not an option. I tried to change my room but the hotel was full. I also heard another guest complain about the sweltering conditions. This is a new build, poorly designed with cheap materials. Even at this early stage, things are falling apart. I didnt leave Koruna rested but then this is a roadhouse and moving on makes it bearable. Oh, and the reception desk staff were very friendly and sorry they couldn't deal with my 'frying' problem.

    Very clean and welcoming hotel

Excellent value for money. The hotel is well maintained, spacious and comfortable rooms. The staff is friendly and responded to every request happily and heartily. We were 12 people in six rooms and we felt that we received excellent value.

Gets worse each time I stay. Definitely NOT a non smoking hotel.

I have stayed at the Hotel Koruna at least six times over the years since it opened. I really liked it initially. Unfortunately they have done little to maintain it - the carpeting in the rooms is badly stained, this last time the shower fell off the wall, the TV did not work, the automatic lights in the halls failed to activate so I had to try to unlock my door in the dark. The rooms really vary in size ranging from a decent size to a cubby hole in the rafters where you have to duck to get into bed - all for the same price. The worst part is that despite claiming to be a non smoking hotel, they allow smoking in their cafe on the main floor, then the employees prop open the door so all the smoke fills the lobby and goes up the stairs to the upper floors and into the rooms. The cafe has appears to have become a sanctuary for the locals in the area so there is someone smoking there virtually all the time. The whole place absolutely reeks of cigarette smoke. This last time I was booked to stay for three days but left after my first night. If you like fresh air and having things work, DO NOT STAY HERE.

    Expensive and Not Good

We stayed this hotel for a week. We don't like our stay. It is very expensive and breakfast not included the price. We stayed in the heart of Rome cheaper price before. Breakfast is very poor. It has 3stars but it deserves one star hotel. Second floor is worse than a penthouse. If you are tall you may injure your head.
