Unprofessional staff who is trying to avoid any responsibilityWe were attending an event, which was held in Hotel Karelia. We have used their services, as we have booked a trip to Kizhi Island directly throught hotel Karelia. When coming back from the trip, the boat got delayed to such extend, that we have missed our train (40minutes). At first, when called upon responsibility, the staff of the hotel tried to convince us that the delay was within a range of tolerance stated in the rules. When we checked the rules written in russian, there was no such statement, so obviously they just tried to cheat us, hoping we wouldnt be able to check the validity of their excuses. Finally, we have gotten some recognition of our claim for the refund, but we were told to contact the responsible person by email and obviously this was just another trick, since our emails were mostly ignored. This all convinced us that the staff of the hotel are not honest people and it would be worth avoiding services provided by this hotel.

Great hotel in front of Onega LakeI chose Hotel Karelia for its proximity to the port, since our main goal (just like for most of the people) was to visit beautiful Kizhi. In the meantime we wanted to enjoy great views, and it was such a pleasure. The hotel has a great restaurant, and a spa centre. Our room was confortable and clean and even included a balcony with outstanding views. The reception staff was friendly, helpful, and even spoke good english!! All hotel guests get a discount for a ferry to Kizhi. Absolutely recommended!

Location, Surroundings & Restaurant! The hotel is surrounded by nature and very close to Lake Onega. The train station is only a 15-minute ride away, and taxis can be easily booked through the hotel at a competitive price. Rooms are furnished simply (so don't expect Starwood-style luxury), but clean and well-appointed. The only down side is that the water-flow of the bathroom shower is a little weak (which is unexpected given this is a spa hotel). The location and restaurant more than make up for it - one can enjoy the peace and beauty of nature within a pace; then have a quiet and sumptuous meal at the hotel restaurant, which is huge, suffused by natural light through tall glass windows, and never too crowded. All in all a great and all-rounded get away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Standard Post-Soviet Three Star ExperienceThe Hotel Karelia has a great location on the lake, which affords it wonderful views. The building itself is a remodeled Soviet intourist, which means it will be familiar to frequent travelers to the region. The hotel is perfectly nice, and clean, but it has no soul, and the rooms are small and lack charm. Still, the rooms are light and clean, with surprisingly soft beds, and have everything you will need, despite the cramped bathrooms. The breakfast, which is not included in your room rate, is not worth the $5 it costs, so I recommend you skip it. The hotel service is not really worth mentioning, although they came through when we needed it most by booking us a trip to Kizhi island, the point of departure for which is very close nearby. The Hotel Karelia might not be the best option in town, but it is not a bad one.

Great value of price paidExcellent views, great location, friendly staff. Great value of price paid. The room rate was very reasonable. They arranged the boat trip to Kizhi Island before our arrival. And taxi train station pick up. Very good SPA inside the hotel. Although you have to be patient when having dinner at the hotel restaurant. Took a while for the foods to be ready. Within 10 minutes walking distance to the pier for Kizhi Island.
