Spa hotel in heart of wild mountain forestI stayed there for weekend in January 2009. First of all it is hard to get there! The hotel is located around 400 km far from Berlin in the sparcely populated area surrounded by trees and mountains. The closer to the hotel people look more German (blond hair, blue eyes, not speaking English). The hotel itself is a large building standing the the hill with nothing around. Just trees and mountains. Hotel features free parking, restaurant, spa center with pool, hammam, solarium. I felt myself like white crow because I was the only non-German in this hotel. Germans with families come here for mountain skiing and relax. The room was okay, clean and comfortable enough. The breakfast was quite rich and tasty. Hammam was very simple (plastic instead of marble stone or smalt inlay), but efficient. Swimming pool was big enough to swim a little bit, but not suitable for normal swimming. To get to solarium you should buy a token from reception. Do not forget to buy it beforehand. The over day we got out to Masserberg village that was 20 km away. The village was charming with small workshops, blue sky and black houses with fish scale type finishing. The hotel is ideal for weekend break out for spa and winter sports.

A peaceful retreatWe thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the hear of the Thuringian Forest! We stayed on a half board basis for 4 nights and it was good value ***It is essential that a member of your travelling party speaks German if you stay in this hotel, as even the receptionist had very little English*** This was not a problem for us; in fact, it was very refreshing! Negative points: the room is very basic, with a small shower, a double bed (but typically German with two single mattresses),an old TV set, and no air conditioning. HOWEVER, the positives far outweigh the negatives! The attaching sports centre has a small swimming pool, excellent tennis & squash facilities, and ten pin bowling. The food was AMAZING: a variety of traditional German dishes every night available every night, in addition to a salad bar and sweet bar. A variety of fresh bread was always available and drink service was prompt. Clearly this was a hotel for families as there were many familiies staying with children under 10. Every morning a leaflet was available on each breakfast table which contained weather info, suggested excursions and activities being delivered at the hotel. The hotel was a great base to explore the famous Rennsteig and the wider area by car such as Coburg, Masserberg and the fantastic Spa at Bad Stafflestein. We would most definitely stay again because of the value for money and location. Shame the beds weren't more comfy!

Unfortunately overpriced and unfriendly staffChecked in this hotel to retreat from the hectic daily routine for a couple of days. To my surprise the hotel was scaffolded. This has not been mentioned on the website. Moreover, the scaffolding barred my view from the upper floor down the valley. The rooms are basic. The bathrooms are small but ok for a few nights. The included breakfast was surprinsingly good and diverse. The hotel however, has an odd policy of prohibiting to bring any food from outside to the room. This sounds a bit absurd given the fact that this hotel is located far away from any convenience store. Furthermore, there might be customers with special dietry plans. I was also not very happy with the receptionist at the counter. No friendliness whatsoever but pure ignorance during check in and during check out. While the nature in this area is great, the hotel itself seems to be overpriced. I am not sure whether I would like to come back here for future vacations.
