Modern hotel in somewhat dated resort

The Monolith is the new 10-story hotel on this sprawling Hawaiian-themed complex that first opened in 1966. The rooms are modern, spacious and clean. There is a wide screen TV but no foreign cable channels. This is a mass-market resort catering to groups of elderly people and young families. If one has kids under the age of 13 they'll find the place a blast. There are a number of hot spring baths (indoor and outdoor) and saunas. One note of caution to Westerners: no tattoos allowed in the baths. (But this is pretty much true at any onsen, gym or spa in Japan). Food in the hotel and complex is mostly buffet style but I doubt anyone comes here for the food.

Fun and relaxing, even for someone from Hawaii!

Five of us from Hawaii (all middle-aged adults with no children along for the trip) visited Spa Resort Hawaiians (SRH) for two nights and stayed at the newest hotel, Monolith Tower. The room was the most spacious that I have ever seen (in a modern hotel) in four trips to Japan. The Resort has three different hotels: Hotel Hawaiians, VIR Port, and Monolith Tower. Each hotel provides aloha wear for the guests, including the children; each hotel has its own specific aloha print so the employees can easily identify specific hotel guests from the many day visitors that go to the Resort. You're not required to wear the attire, but it adds to the flavor of your stay and I loved the fact that I didn't have to worry about another day of laundry to be washed! Your hotel rat at Monolith Tower includes buffet breakfast and dinner; the food offerings are very plentiful and the food quality was excellent! In addition, the Resort has a number of other restaurants (the bill if you eat there is not included in your hotel tab) as well as juice and gelato concessions. There's a little ramen/gyoza restaurant which served the best gyoza I have ever tasted in my life (and the ramen was also very tasty)! Of course, the typical main attractions which draw visitors are the enormous waterpark and the many baths. The waterpark has segregated areas in which parents and very young children can enjoy themselves without the "rough and tumble" of older kids. The adults and older kids can delight in the several enormous waterslides at the park; you pay a nominal fee to use these slides, but my husband thoroughly enjoyed himself and turned into a kid himself, laughing and raring to go for another trip down the slides. I myself am a "bath" person, and the Resort has numerous and varied baths, some of them 100% hot spring water. I was totally awestruck and impressed by the Edo period rotemburo (open air bath); it is the largest rotemburo in the world and supposedly earned them a Guinness World Record certificate. At night, when you bathe in the Edo bath, you can watch "shadow dancing entertainment", where live dancers will perform behind a shoji door and it's like watching a real life shadow puppet play....enchanting. There are tons of shops selling souvenirs (these include a LOT of "Hawaii" souvenirs as well as items from the Iwaki and Fukushima locales) and food items (from Hawaii and the local food products, too). We all chuckled and marvelled at the Hawaiian Host chocolate macadamia candies that were offerred in "only at the SRH" flavors-- we bought some delicious green tea chocolate macadamia nut candies which, to my knowledge, you cannot get anywhere else (not in Hawaii and not online, either). Apparently, the staff rarely deals with non-Japanese visitors so English capability is sparse. Nonetheless, they are very courteous and helpful, and service overall was excellent. As Hawaii residents, the visit was entertaining for its somewhat kitschy nature (i.e., we felt that it mimicked a Waikiki vacation), but given all of the amenities and the courteous and gracious staff, we all had a truly wonderful time. Another convenient service is the FREE shuttle which you can take to/from SRH from Tokyo; it departs Tokyo from Kajibashi parking (next to the Fujiya Yaesu hotel); this free shuttle will save you a bundle if you are paying for rail in Japan.

Fantastic place for the family holiday

This is a all-in-one place for the family to get away for a good and short holiday. The resort has a few theme parks, great restaurants, and the evening Grand Polynesian show is international grade. The Water Park is one of the best that I have seen in several countries. The rooms are large, comfortable and the kids will love to come back again.

    A little Hawaii in Japan..

It was my first time to visit here. I came over with friends family including 3 children under 4 years old. Had a great time even though it was only one night. The best place to stay is Monolith Towers. You check in and get room key at 1pm. Change clothes into resort dress and head to the pool where they have lockers and changing rooms. The lockers in the pool are 300 yen deposit and upon finish you get 100 yen refund. Food and water are costly around the pool area. Bring 2-3 liters of water for your stay. There are hula general events round the clock. The main shows are 1.30pm and 8.30pm for an hour plus. With respect to seating even though they are not costly and can be purchased at the reception, there are open seats at the back that can be used for free to watch the show. Dinner at the French Polynesian restaurant right opposite the lobby was great. Lot of great choices for all ages. There are lot of places to check like Edo area and it's onsen, shops, water park. A good weekend getaway if you are near the Fukushima prefecture. Will be back for sure.

Good place to visit, but not in wintertime.

We visited in the wintertime in our holiday. Because we wanted to enjoy swimming and warmth. First off, the monolith hotel is great. Large rooms with everything that is needed. but thats not surprising. It seems pretty new. The indoor swimming area was far from pleasant. The temperature inside was way to cold and we could see alot of people being cold. It would maybe have helped a bit if the water temperature was a couple degrees higher. So this cut our time in the water by atleast a half. And thats not nice if you want to enjoy with your kids/family. I would not go back very fast. Atleast not in wintertime.
