HappyThe hotel was great for the price. Everyone was very nice and very accommodating. The hotel is located directly across from the train station which makes it a very welcome sight for weary travelers. It has a good location but you do have to walk a bit to the main square which I happened to like. They only provide a very modest continental breakfast and there is no restaurant in the hotel but there are plenty in the neighborhood. There is an internet location around the corner and another at the train station.

A very enjoyable stayMy cousin and I have just returned from a very pleasant stay in Hotel Europa in Spoleto. We chose this hotel because it was near Spoleto's railway station and we wanted to go on a few (train and bus) trips to other towns during our holiday in Umbria. In Spoleto you have to weigh the pro's and cons of a particular location. The hotel is in the lower town and it is a bit of a hike to the upper town which contains just about all of the restaurants and sites which Spoleto has to offer. For us though on this trip, the hotel being 1 minute from the railway station suited us. The hotel was clean, safe and comfortable. Its proprietors where amongst the friendliest that we have experienced in Spoleto (and we have been there many times). The only minor complaint would be that the breakfast was extremely basic. Thank you Hotel Europa for a very enjoyable stay.

Hotel Europa in Spoleto is Useful to Daytrips to Outlying TownsOne would choose the Hotel Europa in Spoleto for one reason alone: because it is located across the square from the train station, and therefore is the best lodging for making daytrips by public transportation to outlying towns such as Narni, Terni, Foligno, Spello, Assisi, Perugia, Norcia (by bus from the station), and Montefalco/Bevagna (bus connection at the Foligno station). Otherwise, one is advised to choose a hotel much closer to historic Spoleto itself (which is 1.5 kilometers distant). This was my second stay (four nights in May) in a decade, and the hotel has not changed a wit since my first stay (nor since its opening in 1982), save for the new flat-screen LCD televisions. The rooms for solo travellers are especially cheap: only 40 Euros per night, including a forgettable breakfast of coffee and packaged croissants from discount grocers. Ask for a room facing the back of the property to avoid some noise from the busy street. There are city buses going up Spoleto's steep hill which depart from the stop in front of the train station, or you can reach Spoleto's convenient new series of 8 escalators by walking about one kilometer toward the town, then left along the dry riverbed to the next bridge. These escalators take you to the panoramic footpath behind the Cathedral (which lead to the famous Ponte delle Torri), and directly under the Fortress (where elevators provide the final hop uphill). There is absolutely nothing wrong with Hotel Europa, save the fact that it is quite dated (early 1980s) and not ideal for a stay in Spoleto proper. Otherwise, the hotel is clean and the proprietors extremely courteous and helpful. Staying at the Hotel Europa in Spoleto will also avoid the cost of taking taxis to reach the train station in time for an early morning or late evening train departure or arrival. Spoleto of course is a fabulous destination.
