Lovely Small HotelWe stayed at the Hotel Eden, Viareggio, Tuscany for six days. This hotel overlooks the sea, in this absolutely fabulous resort, lovely restaurants in the immediate area, boutiques and shops. Lovely sandy beach. Just a few minutes walk to the station where you can get very cheap train rides to Pisa, Florence, Lucca, Sestri Levante, Portofino etc. The buffet breakfast was excellent. Very chic and upmarket area Could not find any faults. Would highly recommend as a base to explore Tuscany.

Clean & ComfortableStayed 3 nights in this hotel in October. I really only used it as a base while I toured Tuscany. The room was a bit small but I found it clean and comfortable and nicely decorated and a small balcony to sit out on. Breakfast offered a good selection including bacon and eggs as well as the usual continental fare. I didnt really meet many members of staff but the ones I did were courteous. Because of the time of year, the hotel wasnt very busy but Im sure it would be a popular choice during high season and the town of Viareggio is very nice. The hotel is situated on the seafront with lots of shops and cafes and restaurants close by. Its about 10 - 15 minutes walk to the railway station.

Filthy Beds, Demeaning StaffThis was quite possibly the worst hotel stay I've had. When we arrived and got into bed, the sheets were full of sand and male body hair (we were two women sharing a room with two twin beds). I immediately went to the front desk and insisted on checking himself. He came up to my room (we were two young women and it was 2am) and felt around the bed. He confirmed that the sheets were filthy and said "it''s fine!" and refused to give us new sheets and said he''d have the maid change them the next day. We were forced to sleep on top of the bedding. The next day, the sheets were still not changed. We went to the front desk again and the same man screamed at us that there was nothing he could do. We finally got him to give us some clean sheets so we could change the beds ourselves, and told me I'd have to speak to the manager in the morning. The next morning, I tried to raise the issue with the person working at the front desk who refused to call the manager. First, he told me I likely brought a man back to my room and didn't remember it when I showed him photos of male leg hair in my bed (I am engaged to be married, and was in the area for an opera festival -- not exactly out partying!). He then brought the maid to the room who was shaking the sheets and screaming at us in Italian that we were liars -- of course, we had changed our own sheets the previous night so of course it looked different! Finally, I requested the manager remove one night from our bill at which point he told me he was going to call the police and have me thrown out of Italy. I travel often for work and stay in hotels all over the world and have never experienced anything remotely like this. This was also the most expensive of the hotels that I stayed in in Italy. I was harassed, screamed at, and made to feel unsafe. One of the men in our travel group, who is African, also received very unpleasant treatment at the hotel and was accused of not being a guest there. The two European looking men in our group had a fine stay, so I believe the staff at this hotel may be sexist and racist. If you want a clean hotel, there are better and cheaper options.

DisappointedAs a young, female, solo traveller I did not feel safe during a weekend trip at Hotel Eden! 2 female friends came up to my room after a dinner outing quickly and the front desk literally yelled at them demanding their passport then kicked them out of the hotel saying they had to wait for me outside? I tried to explain they werent at all staying with me and said I didnt appreciate the way they were treating me as a guest and the employee said I am not here to please you. I was disgusted by the 2 male staff working that night and felt unsafe leaving my belongings in my room because of how aggressive they were saying I was sneaking guests in. Unbelievable. The only positive I had with this hotel was the air conditioning and shower were nice. I would never return to this hotel unfortunately because of unprofessionalism and tiny room for paying $120/night. Plenty of hotels in close proximity that I will stay at next time.
