A nice, empty envelopeThe hotel: The hotel is situated along a very frequented street from Merano, Italy to Switzerland separated from the traffic just by a narrow line of trees planted on a slightly elevated ground. It's 3stock low, oblong white building looks nice. The room: The hotel's main problem is the road making more than half of the rooms very noisy. Fortunately, we got a room to the other side. The receptionist called it the direction 'to the garden'. In fact we were on the north side of the hotel, closely looking into a steep hill slope with grass and a few small trees. Still, that would not be so bad, but we have got the room No. 101 which has on its balcony a big, nearly 1m elevated and in black metal tin covered ventilation and lighting shaft for the basement digged under our room. So half of the balcony was occupied by this behemoth. Not being enough, the outlook what was not blocked by the schaft led to a hotel's maintenance area comprising some garage with opened doors where one night the light was on for the whole night and a big garbage container one day empty, the other one already full of garbage. The rest of the outlook was to the above mentioned 'garden'. The room itself was equipped nicely (the bed for example has got a kind of canopy) but from the mentioned reasons it was very dark and the lights were not dimensioned to enlighten the whole room. The plus was, we almost did not hear he street-noise during nights. The staff/services: As we saw our room, we wanted to change it for some other. The receptionist, even still smiling, was seemingly overwhelmed by our request. She had to ask her superior with the result that there are all other rooms on that side of the hotel booked. We stayed in the hotel for 3 nights and as I can say (from the Nr. of people and tables on the breakfast, from the lights on the evening,...) the hotel was not booked for more than 50% so I doubt, she could not find a better room for us. A kind of 'second class citizen' feeling remained in us. That feeling was even stronger when we payed at the end of our stay. When I booked the hotel through our agent, I intended to pay some extras with a voucher. As the receptionist declined our request to change the room, she instantly asked for the original of the voucher with the reasoning that she wants to have something in the hand. As I gave it to her, I reminded her to not apply the voucher before the end of our stay as I already felt, the hotel would not deserve to pay much for the extras. I repeated my request to her superior on the evening before our departure as it was totally clear that our bill will be much smaller than the voucher and I told her that I will pay the bill directly. As you may guess, the next morning was the voucher applied and the receptionist told me that she just verified the validity and along that, the voucher was applied. I told her that this is not true and that she can verify the voucher without the application. She admitted it (so she knew about the possibility) but insisted that the voucher is already applied and con not be taken back. Instead, she tried to offer me some more extras to increase the bill. Again, I told her that this is not true and that she has to call our agent and take the application back. With some doubts she did it and we finally got the voucher back. In this situation, it was our luck that we travel with our agent often - otherwise, we would loose money in this hotel... We did an opposite experience with the room maid - she tried her best to make our room better and we found every day a different towel-creation in our bed. From the staff in the restaurant, we got a feeling, that they are not allowed to talk to us. When we tried to talk to them, they answers were short and cautious. Strange for a hotel staff which has to be as friendly as possible... The food: The hotel has got a big restaurant -there were tables inside and outside. When we were there, majority of the people sit outside. The food quality was average and there was no fish on the dish list, so we had problems to choose. The restaurant offers 5round menu as well but we were not able to convince us to take it - the dishes did not appeal us. - breakfast: a good one with selection of vegetables, meet (including fish) and reasonable selection of sweets. - afternoon brunch: actually some salads (vegetable and meet) prepared. We had again the feeling it is there justo fullfil the need of a brunch. There was nobody from the staff there, just some food lying in an empty restaurant - dinner: as described above the dinner was just an average and the best what we got there was once when we got by 5 minutes after the kitchen closed (but there were still guests receiving their orders sitting around) and the waitress convinced the cooks to make us one dish (the same for both of us and it had to be a pasta). We took big portion of one of the starters (spaghetti with shrimps) and it was light and tasty. The facilities: - spa - the spa is kind of challenge to find (the hotel is long and the floors are a bit complicated) but once you are there it is nice and the outside resting area is quiet (you can hear the street but it is not disturbing). There is one inside poll and couple of saunas. We used only the pool. The outside resting area is protected by the hotel building from the street and by the spa and a hill on the inner side so it is a kind of oasis paved with big marble stones. Nice ;) - parking: you can park free of charge along the whole hotel building between it and the street - no problem at all. - Internet: barely accessible - we got two logins. One worked only once and with the second one, one of our iPhones could not connect at all. A nightmare.. The surrounding: Just in front of the hotel, there is an old water power plant built on the river. You can see just the water input but it is still impressing. - hikes: On the first day, we did only a short one to the the waterfall - it was really an easy one. The following day, we did a very long but beautiful one to the highest lakes in the Alps. After a short discussion, we used the route No. 6 through a valley in favor of the other ones going through the hills (no. 7 or No. 25). It was a very nice hike as nearly the whole path (almost 1.500 high-meters) was paved with flat stones put vertically without big steps - we suppose, it served in the past as supply route to deliver goods to the cottages at the lakes. Currently, there is a rope way for this purpose but the trail still uses the old path. In the hotel, the hiking maps (and all other materials) are located in the 1st floor in the area just above the reception just for the case the receptionist will forget to tell it to you like in our case... Conclusion: The hotel is situated directly next to a frequented street, so in the big part of the hotel area you hear the noise from the adjacent street. Further, we were served by a receptionist which helped us in no way and at the end she tried to use our voucher in her favor. The room with balcony with integrated ventilation/lighting tunnel and outlook into an maintenance area with big garbage container did not make our stay really a pleasant one. The restaurant with average food and overall strange feeling of the hotel.... From all the above, I would hesitate to recommend the hotel to my friends. On the other side, if you prefer an hotel for just overnight which lies just next to the street with a resonable breakfast and own pool with nice outside rest area, this one could be for you.

Nice solution for familiesWe stayed at Edelweiss hotel immediately after Christmas holidays and booked our room just one day before checking in. When we arrived we found a very polite girl at the reception who told us that hotel direction upgraded our room class without making us paying extra money. We were so happy to find a big size room with wardrobe and a cradle for our baby. Beds were really comfortable and equipped with fancy fold bath towels, which impressed very much our 5-years-old girl! Even the bathroom was remarkable, including both the shower and the bathtub and a really nice apple-wooden cabinet. Restaurant was large and arranged in different rooms. For dinner, we stayed in the Tyrolean-style "stube" while we had breakfast in another room, even nice and clean. Food was good, with a chart with different options (even for vegetarian). Unfortunately, menu for the HB staying did not include an option for children (dishes were a little bit too sophisticated for our 5 and 1 years old children who would have preferred to eat cotoletta or a simple pasta with tomato sauce!). Anyway, the hotel includes also a pizzeria communicating with the restaurant area, so our suggestion is to reserve just bed and breakfast for the babies, in order to be free to order pizza or other menus for them. Breakfast offered a good selection of cakes, home-made bread, cheese and ham, cereals, juices, yogurt, fruit and vegetables. Afternoon break was a bit poor, and not so well furnished, just few kind of cakes from the evening before we suppose, but however not so bad. As for the wellness area, we just accessed the swimming pool: water was pleasantly warm and the pool big enough to allow us swimming in complete relax. For children there is also a playing room equipped with toys. It was winter and we did not stay in the garden so I can't tell if there are swings or slides or other outdoor equipment for children. We did not see any of them from the windows. We think this hotel is a good choice for families, very close to Merano (just 5 minutes by car) and to Val Venosta.

Nice hotel near MeranoBooked this hotel 2 days in advance based on price, location, and room photos. We stopped here only for the night on our driving trip through the Stelvio Pass. Conveniently located on SS38, lots of parking, with restaurant options attached. We ate a nice dinner at the restaurant. There is also a pizzeria. Breakfast was included in the price of the room and there were lots of breakfast items to choose from. The hotel looked newly renovated. Our room looked modern and clean. The bathroom had a glass door so no privacy if you are sitting on the toilet or showering. The bath towels were huge so you could drape one over the glass door for privacy. Bath robes and slippers were provided. Reception was very friendly. They speak a little English, enough to get by. We were very happy with our stay.
