Hiking in the French AlpsLast week a group of us (20pax) spent a hiking week in the French Alps. We were based in Aussois, Haute Maurienne, at an altitude of 1'500m on a plateau, which means sun right into the evening hours. We flew into Geneva and organised 2 mini coaches to pick us up and return us for the 21/2hr transfer. Our accommodation was the 3*Hotel Du Soleil (+33479203242) with 5* food. Our meals were all made from local produce and were excellent. Our en-suite rooms were comfortable, very clean and more than adequate, all equipped with telephone and TV. They also have a sauna. Management could not have been more helpful and accommodating with advice where our hikes were concerned. They also included 1 free 8-seater return transfer to the start of a hike 30.min away. The local taxi service Maurius (+33479833320) was equally helpful and most reliable when we requested transfers to the next level at 2'000m, from where some of our hikes started. We have returned here for the 2nd time and have not covered a fraction of the walks. The area is also well knows to cyclists. For hikers, the OS map we used is "3534OT". The book describing the walks is "Les Randonnées de Vanoise - Haute Maurienne, Savoie", by Patrick Col.

Still like going home...I have previously reviewed the Hotel du Soleil. I and my friends were very sad to hear Manuel, Florence and Stefan had sold their shares and were moving off to pastures new. So it was not with a little trepidation that we returned for our annual visit this year. We need not have worried. Under the patronage of francois and caroline, with jennifer on reception, the welcome is as friendly as ever, the rooms are unchanged, the spa area is well utilised and the bar now has 'pression' on tap. Our only comment is that the wine list is now somewhat abbreviated, albeit still more than adequate, and the restaurant, perhaps not unsurprisingly, has not quite the flair that Manuel gave it, hence the 4* rating rather than the previous 5*. I suspect as the new team find their feet, this will change. We will be more than happy to return next year....and i remain very happy to thoroughly recommend the hotel

Weeklong VisitI was traveling to the area for business and this was a great place to stay for the week. The rooms are cozy, but the view from the rooms are excellent and the staff is incredibly accommodating. They even answered many of my questions through email before I arrived. Breakfast and dinner selections are good and the gym was small, yet everything you'd need for a short trip. The staff also offered laundry services, which was very helpful. I didn't get a chance to use the Nordic bath or the sauna on the rooftop patio, but they looked incredible. The wifi was spotty at times, but usually cleared up if I waited about 15 minutes. Overall, a great stay at this great location.

convenient and pleasant,This was a new experience for us...we took the TGV from Paris and 10 min taxi to the hotel in the small town of Aussois. Town hall, church and post office across the street. all very handy. The weather didn't cooperate but that is not the hotel's problem. the rooms are very small but the views are great. rental shops handy as was the bakery/tea shop don't think we would take demi pension again: resort prices for not excellent fare we found the staff kind and helpful and particularly enjoyed the evening fires and the spa with jacuzzi bath and sauna.

Pleasant mountain hotel experienceThis was one of several visits to Aussois but the first time staying in the village. This hotel fit our needs of two rooms for three nights. The rooms were next to each other with a common balcony. Pleasant and friendly staff, clean neat rooms and good breakfast. Would definitely stay there again.
