Nice place to stayI booked this place because it looked interesting and at the time was very competitively priced. I got a discount through a Chinese app and ended up staying for a week while traveling. My room was on the inside and it was next to the night managers room or something. She was on and off the phone all night and whenever someone needed anything I could clearly head the conversation. That brings up the next point, if you have to leave your room to request anything, soap, towels, hair dryer, someone to fix the bathroom door so you can have some privacy, don't. All of the reasonable requests that I overheard from the locals to the management were met with "No," "Tomorrow," "I don't have one," or "You have to pay more." Luckily I didn't need much while backpacking so I was fine. Check-in means calling the manager and letting them know you are there. They were close by but not in the office. The room had a dirty floor, bathroom was okay, bed was nice, you standard mid-tier Chinese hotel experience. The wifi was alright with decent speeds, VPN had issues though. I was able to do my work.

Very bad hotel - avoid it!Worst hotel we have ever stayed in. The only good thing about this hotel is the location, which is directly at the drum and bell tower, otherwise there are no good things about it. Very hard to find. We couldn't check in, because the co-worker there said he never got any reservations from "Venere" and he didn't know this website at all. After a while, he offered us the worst room of all (without windows, dark and seems dirty, but later we knew all rooms there were dirty!!), because he meant that we could only get the worst room for what we had paid. Again after a long negotiation, he gave us a little better room upstairs in which the TV did not work, the floor was very dirty, the toilet did not have a cover, instead they put some cardboard on it. There is no working light in the bathroom, actualy there is only one light in the whole room and it's just some half broken standing lamp! Water pressure in the hotel is soooooooo low that when two or more rooms use water at the same time, there is only little water coming out, sometimes no water! One more BIG problem in our room (don't know about other rooms), it was like a swimming pool when we had a shower, the water doesn't flow off! If you tell the staff about the problems the only answer you get is "yes, we know" but they do not want to fix anything at all. Further there seems to be no room service (at least if you don't ask for it). We would never come to this hotel again and think that "Venere" should remove it from the site.

If you want to be bold, go aheadWhat was supposed to be a very good choice in a hutong endind up on the street with no room. I should have trusted several comments on this hotel. They are happilly practicing surbooking. as this place is very small, there is a very good chance that you end up with no room when you arrive. We were three adults and two kids (4 years & 7 years old). They simply told us that maybe they forgot to take into account our booking. We had to threaten them so they help us find some other place nearby: a hotel that was more expensive and in such a poor state of cleanliness that have never seen, even in the most remote countries I have visited. At the second hotel, they even took our luggage out while out on the second day and blocked the room to pay more : threatening them in Chinese to call the police was the only way for them to back off. So be bold and attracted by the reasonable prices: Book and sleep on the street!! Unfortunately, we were not the only ones to experience this. By the way, I would not call that a hutong when basically 1 house out of 3 around has already been destroyed: that is more of a construction site.

Not as bad as some claimI dont get the negative comments on this page. Let me clear it up from an objective point of view: Location: its located right in the middle of old Beijing, along the axis of the city (cant have a better fengshui!), its nestled in a side alley, so you have to look for it, but its not an impossible task. Advantage to this is: its quiet, no cars, tourists, screams of children. Also youre at a reasonable walking distance from the underground and bus stations, from the sichahai bar street and the hip nanluoguxiang. You are in the centre of a 24 million people metropole, but with the feeling of being in a village. The guesthouse: yes, this IS a simple guesthouse, you might even call it boutique-guesthouse, seen its decorated in old Ming-Qing style, but *not* a hotel (like others claim it to be). This is perfect if youre a backpacker, and only use the place to sleep and have a shower. Cleanliness: well, bear in mind that Beijing is a terribly dusty place (the Gobi desert starts at 70km northwest from the city), a cleaning lady will come dust-off your room once a day. Clean it as far as she can. After all its a guesthouse. Friendliness: far as I am concerned a very friendly and patient staff. They helped me infinite times to get on the WiFi. Theyre open for any kind of suggestion you might need. In conclusion: if you are looking for a place where to relax for a few days, where you can spend time reading a book or do some writing, then this might not be the place for you, the space is very limited. But if you need a decent looking, reasonably clean and central place, from where you can explore the city, this guesthouse is perfect.

BeijingThe hotel is located on the north east corner of the bell tower down a back alley, there are no English signs. There were two people who worked there. One spoke English and the other didn't. The rooms were quite small and very basic there is no storage space. The beds were rock solid. The bathroom was small with a poor shower. The wifi was hit and miss. There is a small TV in the room. From the hotel you can see the bell/drum tower, there are a number of restaurants 10 minute walk from the hotel. There is a subway station 10 minute walk away. The Forbidden City is about a 30 minute walk away.
