This hotel more than met our expectationsWe booked the Hotel Castor via Inghams after doing a lot of research in to where to ski at half term. We usually go to France and enjoy the chalet experience and were looking for something family friendly, not too expensive and not too stuffy in a hotel. This was our first experience of skiing in Italy. Last year we went to Whistler. To be honest, as a family we enjoyed Champoluc just as much!!! We chose Hotel Castor because of the good reviews and because it is a family run hotel. It did not disappoint! The hotel was really good - fantastic breakfast buffet, great evening meals and amazing wine list. Rooms were clean and quiet. The bar has a lovely chilled vibe with lots of comfy sofas and nooks and crannies of you want to find a quiet corner. As we were there at half term there were lots of children, big and small, and all of them were made welcome. There was a good mix of nationalities - mainly English, French, Dutch and Italian guests. We also loved Herman's wine tasting evening. Our Inghams rep Amy was lovely and really helpful. We would definitely go back!!! We chose Champoluc on the recommendation of a friend who goes every year and said it was the best kept secret in the Alps - and he was right. The skiing was great, with well looked after pistes and not at all busy once the weekend was over. Beautiful scenery, plenty of well priced mountain restaurants, far friendlier and cheaper than in the big french resorts. The only down side is that you tend to ski across several valleys in the day to get a variety of runs and so could be far away from home if you were planning to meet kids from ski school. As we all skied together it was not a problem for us. The red runs and black runs are all pretty easy for an advanced intermediate so maybe not a resort for those in search of lots of black run thrills. Champoluc is v good for off piste. You can also access a number of smaller local resorts on the same ski pass (transport permitting) We also hired a ski instructor for a 4 hour family guiding/lesson. Andrea V. He was fab. Champoluc is not for those in search of a big night life but there are plenty of bars and eating options if you should want to stray out of your hotel. We did not really feel any need to leave the Castor, but we did go to the Monterosa Spa one afternoon which was discounted for Castor guests and I recommend it to relax any sore ski muscles. Castor must be wonderful in summer too, so one way or the other we will be back.

Fabulous authentic Italian ski hotelStayed for 5 days March 2019-universally friendly staff from cleaners through dining room staff, receptionists to owneers Herman and Beatrice.Superb original historic dining rpoom updated to modern standards is a fabulous venue for sumptuous buffet breakfast to start the day with wonderful views .The bar comes alive in the evening most specially when they have a karaoke night every Tuesday where the atmosphere grows through the evening a =nd a dazzling array of vocal and musical talent. On other evenings a big screen for viewing Champions League or rugby six nations is very welcome too. The rooms are was spotless as the public areas -plentiful hot water, loads of coathooks ( why do all other ski hotels never have enough?),comfortable beds and soft fluffy pillows ensuring a good night's sleep.Location is excellent for ski hire shops, the main lift and the wonderful restaurants in this hidden italian ski gem .

Make It Easy On YourselfAmericans and Europeans should remember the song We Are Family by Sister Sledge from 1979. That song title embodies the Hotel Castor in Champoluc Italys Aosta Valley. Our first communication and outreach to the hotel was establishing a reservation with multi lingual concierges par excellence Karin and Stephania. These ladies answered all questions be they via phone or with immediate and specific emails. Their efficiency was demonstrated from check in to check out after eight idyllic days. The hosts, Beatrice and Herman (he, a Brit married into the Hotel Castor family) and the entire staff embraced my family and other guests warmly and with enthusiasm. They are all fonts of information. The hotel offers half board providing sumptuous breakfasts and dinners served by a warm, friendly and efficient staff. Yuri and Fabio made us feel we were on a cruise ship recommending various specialties and customizing our meals prepared rapidly and served hot. Thank you chefs. I am a stickler for cleanliness. The Hotel Castor passes the acid test. Silverware, dinnerware and glassware are spotlessly clean in the hotels beautiful dining room. Complimenting the dining room staff and chefs are the chamber team servicing the rooms. The rooms are very clean comfortable, warm (if need be) and cozy with plenty of space for luggage and ski wear. The bathrooms are bright, spotless and aseptic. You are a pleasant four tenths of a mile walk to the base of the gondola which is the embarkation to the three valleysChampoluc-Frachey, Gressoney-La-Trinite, Alagna-Valsesia . Skiing was spectacular with consecutive bluebird days. The Hotel Castor has ample ski and heated boot storage. A top secret is secure storage for boots, skis and poles at Ivans Tako Ski Rental next door to the gondola (thank you Karin and Stephania). In the morning after your quick walk you can easily buckle into your heated boots and be at the gondola terminal in a New York minute. The fee is nominal and saves the drudgery of walking in boots or carrying boots and skis back and forth daily. Another wonderful advantage of living in this hotel is that the front desk staff can sell the ski passes for your entire stay precluding long wait lines at the ticket counter at the gondola. Champoluc is a charming town with many amenities which are really not needed. After all you are staying at the Hotel Castor! There is something always going on at the hotel. We enjoyed returning from skiing and trying a myriad of new (to us) drinks aptly served by Eleonora and her aunt Beatrice as well as other members of the team in a charming and large lounge. Herman, a member of LOrdine Della Vite Wine Society hosts one or two wine tastings weekly. Tuesday nights are rollicking fun affair as Herman and other guests get behind the 88s or do karaoke or perform other musical treats. My family was a party of six. The hotel absorbed us and adopted us. I cannot express how much we enjoyed ourselves as guests in this wonderful spot. It was a sad arrivederci; we hope to return soon. Thank you Herman and Beatrice for your outstanding hospitality. Bruce, Spencer, Caren, Chris, Abraham and Marija

Comfortable Monterosa AccomodationsIn March 2019 with my wife and daughter spent a week at the Hotel Castor. Named after one of the 4000 meter peaks up the valley on the Swiss border, this hotel is located a few blocks from the Champoluc ski lifts. Our room was comfortable with a view out the front southerly toward the old church. Bathroom fixtures and facilities were clean and functional. There is a comfortable lounge with bar on site, and an interesting beer bar half a block north. Great wine selection on premises. The daily breakfast was sumptuous with a good choice of pastries, cheeses, cereal and fruit, together with made to order omlets. Dinner was mostly very good although some of the meat dishes (rabbit, venison) were different from typical American fare. Dessert choices were good and featured a sweet wine. Service was friendly and good. The management/co-owner included ex-pat Brit Herman who was an available and helpful presence through out out stay. He is expert in local Aosta Valley wines and offered a wine tasting that was fun and informative. Only a few negatives; some of our group did not enjoy some of the dinner entrys, and the elevator was a bit noisy from our room. We did ride the free bus to the gondola ski lift or to the funicular; too long a walk in ski boots.

Another comfortable stay at this super-friendly family hotelMy 4th visit to the Castor in as many years. And like so many other of its regular guests, I shall be returning next year!! There is a lovely friendly feel to the hotel. It is not super-smart, but the bedrooms and en-suite bathrooms are very comfortable, the breakfasts are excellent, and dinner options are invariably interesting. Herman is a great host and Music Nights fun. I only wish there was an open log burning fire!
