I love this hotel! Our room was quite large with three French doors so we got some light in the "cave". My friend and I got a two room "suite" for approximately $250 per night. The couch in the living room opened to a queen bed. There was a small refrigerator and an area for cooking. The room was stocked with local wine. The only drawback was a small bathroom with little room for toiletries. The hotel serves breakfast and the woman who prepares and serves it, Katia, is extremely kind. The front desk person/manager, Marika (?), was extremely helpful and provided good restaurant reservations. The hotel is in an area fairly close (about 95 steps up) to a nice piazza with decent restaurants and outdoor seating. I highly recommend the hotel. It is unique, fairly priced, and staffed wll.

Time machineA couple years back I stayed in a quite decent hotel on the edge of Matera's old "sassi" (caves) district, which one's car could reach on the street side. This time we opted for the full "sassi" experience, with this splendid little B&B deep in the heart of the Caveoso/San Pietro quarter. The closest we could get with our car was a 10-minute walk from the hotel, which requires me to alert travelers up front of this one caveat: You may want to arrange your luggage so you only carry the lightest overnight bag to the Antico Convicino, because your physical fitness will be tested in navigating the steep, ancient stairways into the Caveoso area. (We carried our bags downhill for our arrival, and my bride was spitting bullets -- when we left it was uphill, and I had to carry her suitcase and mine on two separate trips. Just sayin'.) With that warning out of the way, once we had passed the physical training test, the Antico Convicino proved to be delightful accommodations, a kind of time machine that transports you to another era, to another way of life. The Antico Convicino occupies half of the cave dwelling space on a little cul-de-sac carved out of the rock -- so characteristic that several of the Italian tour groups that were crowding through the sassi during our stay stopped at our little niche as a star example of the ancient lifestyle. We had opted for a "standard" room, 90 a night in shoulder season (April), and it was really tight. The double bed was smack against the cave wall, so only one side of it had space to get up. The bathroom too was ingeniously compact; though the shower was not physically separated from the other necessary installations, somehow using the shower did not leave the other facilities wet. We did not, alas, carve out time to sample the spa. The Wi-Fi in the room was very strong. Unfortunately, there was no place really to sit other than the bed: as I say, the accommodation was very tight. Happily, just outside our room the hotel has placed a little outdoor table with two seats, and we were usually able to park ourselves there and still pick up the Wi-Fi, to write postal cards, etc. The proprietor, Tommaso, was very attentive to our requests for guidance, as were his wife, and the two young ladies who alternated in manning the reception desk, Giosy and Marika, both went out of their way to be helpful. The breakfast spread was unremarkable but quite satisfying, and the breakfast area was deep in the cave of an ancient sasso. Once we had settled in, we realized how ideally located the Antico Convicino is for enjoying the "Matera experience" -- in the very heart of the ancient district. Within a 5 minute walking radius of the hotel, one finds all the major points of civic life -- the rupestrian churches on one side, the Baroque churches uptown on the other, the proliferating restaurants, and the spectacle of each evening's passeggiata on Via Ridola and the Corso.

Quirky, but it is so, so good! Our bedroom was a former cave, within historic Matera Sassi. Creating the Antico Convicio has been an extremely clever concept, and has been achieved so, so well. If you are looking for a hotel with a difference, with something that is provided on a quality level, and you want to stay in Matera Sassi... then look no further than the Antico Convicio. Nice people, quality room, good breakfast, great location fantastic experience. Tip: make use of the hotels car park/transfer service, especially if you are on a long trip, with lots of luggage. Otherwise you will experience a real challenge getting your luggage up or down the many steps to the hotel. For EUR17 it was an expense well worth paying.

Spelunking hotel! The rooms in cave are so cool.literally. Even though I was a single my room was huge big entry into a living space and small kitchen, up (and down) a couple of steps to a bathroom in the rear then upstairs to a very large bedroom all high-ceilings. I had two comfortable chairs in the bedroom if I chose to sit and read. But none on the lower level. The bedroom had the most amazing views of Matera. I also had a door which exited to a small landing with stairs to ground level. There is no air conditioning, but the night cools down and a quiet fan is provided. One negative is the bathroom is downstairs, and one has to be careful because there are quite a few stairs. It would not be appropriate for anyone with mobility issues. There also are stairs up then down into the bathroom and light is not great. I used my phone flashlight a few times. Yet, the bathroom is large with place for toiletries and a sizable shower. I was with friends and everyone had a different configuration, so youd have to read the other reviews go get a sense of the spaces. I used the kitchen for coffee (coffee is provided) but the hotel has a lovely breakfast buffet of fresh fruit, pastries, eggs and whatever you want. It is more than enough to get you up those stairs. Oh, did I mention that to get to the main streets of Matera, you have to climb 81 stairsthere is a short cut 63 stairs. (You dont have to drag your suitcases up or down. There are bellman to take you up. I would imagine if you had problems with the stairs, they could drive you up to the main part of town. Check with the hotel.) And, one particular irritant..for some reason, the town youth congregated right outside the plaza of the hotel. I actually had to wade through about 20 boys to get through to my door. At first, I was a little apprehensive, but they are polite and move aside. But, they are noisy. However, there must be a curfew. At 11:30 they disappeared. Still, it is disconcerting. Service is very good. Found all Italians in the service industry to be polite.
