    Ryokan style hotel, No WiFi

This ryokan style hotel is all inclusive with meals and onsen. Check in required a 20 minute sit down conversion to make reservations for meals and understanding all the information about hotel. Then you are walked to your room, so check in is about 30 minutes. At Hoshino, you must eat dinner and breakfast at the reserved specific time. Our day was planned around these assigned times. View from room was lovely, looking out at grounds with pond and koi. Room is tatami mat, sleep on floor with futon. Shower and bathtub (onsen style) are outside with privacy fence. No wifi in room, only in public front lobby. Meals are kaiseki style, very beautiful. We wore yukata to dinner (yukata provided) which is a tradition at ryokan hotels. Only one staff member spoke limited English. No menu or hotel information in English.

    Improving Ryokan

This Onsen has been updated with two floor suites where older suites have been joined into one by a private staircase. This arrangement provide lots of space and a private outdoor Japanese bath for washing and soaking. The hotel of course has large baths open to all residents that are lovely. We found them, both female and male, a little cool for our tastes. The in-room bath was about right. The food was good. The service was excellent and at least a few of the staff speak very good English. I believe that much more major updates are planned for this property. It seems to be a recently acquired establishment in the early days of improvement. Wi-Fi for Japanese tastes was pretty wide spread, but that means having subscribed to, e.g., Softbank, for Wi-Fi access. The hotel provides good free Wi-Fi in the lobby.

    Nice choice in Ito

My partner and I have stayed here twice. It lacks a beautiful view of the sea; it is rather a town onsen, but the Japanese food served here is superb. The meals are served in a dining room with separated areas for privacy. This is far better than the traditional style of serving meals in your room, food that we generally find rather mechanically prepared and not really that good. There is an outdoor swimming pool and of course onsen baths for men and women. In the early evening it is nice to sit outside and enjoy free beer. The entrance area has a huge impressive painting. I believe this onsen is a private equity investment.

    Old but clean and nice

With Great Japan hospitality and big rooms, Traditional japan onsen, nice but I feel a bit expensive for two of us stay it cost US$ 550 for a night. Few hotels near with similar prices its also good. Kais other hotel is very nice which is very close. Overall its good.

    Great Kaiseki Meal

We always enjoy this onsen. The Kaiseki meal is creative and delicious. We were a party of four this time. For the most part, we had the ofuro all to ourselves. The property is rather old and has been refurbished. They seem to be on a cost-cutting campaign. The hotel eliminated the happy hour beer service near the pool, a feature I always enjoyed, and the van service from the station to the onsen. We don't mind the walk. For the meal, one small comment and one more significant point. The cheesecake desert was tasty but the strawberry inside it had been refrigerated and was almost frozen. More significant is the poor quality of wines, at least the one we chose. I have had some very good red wines from the Loire Valley, France, and I ordered one with our meal. It was 5,500, way higher than the average retail price of 1,333 I checked on Vivino. The typical markup in a restaurant for a bottle of wine is about 100%. The wine I ordered at Hoshino Ito was very plain, tepid, unimaginative. The hotel management could well consult someone who knows wine to recommend decent choices consistent with the quality of the kaiseki meal.
