2 stars for cleanliness and room condition, 3-4stars for the restLike another recent review, we had concerns about the cleanliness of the hotel. There were crumbs in each of the kitchen drawers, a tissue and plastic cap on the side of the bed, and in an age of COVID, we questioned the sanitary practice of their cleaning crew. The room was spacious but dated and in need of maintenance. The closet doors were broken (one was off the track, the other was broken - see picture below), the caulking in the bathroom was peeling with mold setting in, and I feel like I overpaid for my room. We considered a Hampton Suite in Ogunquit that was as spacious but 33% cheaper but opted for the Homewood Suites in Portsmouth based on TripAdvisor ratings. After our stay, we felt like we overpaid for our stay. In hindsight, we couldve changed rooms but in the world of COVID, the online check-in and digital key seemed the better way to go so we had limited interaction with the front desk and realized the room issues after we had fully settled in. We did like the digital key feature and hope we were just unfortunate to find the one bad room and the one time the cleaning staff cut corners in this hotel. Overall the place was good, the staff were very friendly but the condition and cleanliness of our room was substandard. I would not stay there again unless the price was significantly better than other options.

Very DISAPPOINTINGWe reserved a king one bedroom suite in late May for a late June stay. Upon check in, there were no rooms of that type available and no one could tell us why. We were not offered any compensation for the inconvenience. We had a choice: a king studio suite or a one bedroom with 2 queen beds. We wanted space so we reluctantly chose the one with the queen beds. The carpet was stained and worn, the beds were hard and the pillows were flimsy. There was no housekeeping for the 4 days we were there. This was not mentioned to us. It was to to the coronavirus. We will never stay at that hotel again. We were looking for a place to stay for a full week next year, but it won't be there.

BEWARE before you reserveFor starters, we were greeted with, "Just so you know, we are not offering No breakfast, lunch, pub or housekeeping . If you need clean towels, let us know." Parking is not free. Room was not clean. All other amenities had very strict conditions - due to covid. All understood but since so many amenities are not offered, we should have at least been told in an email prior to arriving and cost should have been lowered. Unfriendly staff - esp front desk. This is our 3rd and last visit here. We do not recommend.

Belated review of a lovely property.I was back in Portsmouth, New Hampshire with my wife over the weekend and stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn, a subpar experience. While I was writing my review, I remembered I had reviewed everything but the Hotel from our summer vacation, so here it is, albeit a few months late. Having canceled our planned trip to TN because of the Covid-19 surge, my wife and I decided to take the family to the "safe" live free or die state just north of us. We settled on Portsmouth, New Hampshire, a quaint good-sized town filled with shops and restaurants and close to several beaches and other attractions. We decided to make the Homewood Suites by Hilton our base of operations. Armed with a few years' worths of accumulated Honors points, we reserved two adjacent "suites" for our family of eight. One suite had a full kitchen and separate bedroom, the other a kitchenette in a studio layout. I have many good things to say about this property and very few minor aggravations. First, the staff was over the top polite, friendly, and eager to make our stay as lovely as possible given the struggles with Covid-19 restrictions. Even Housekeeping always had a warm greeting and smiled with their eyes (faces hidden by masks). The young lady at the desk went over all the local attractions when we checked in and even sent so far as to provide her top five restaurant recommendations. We packed as though we were moving. Anyone who has vacationed with a family our size knows what I am talking about. It took a lot of time to unpack, organize, put all the food away, etc. Towards the end of this process, we discovered one of the kitchen cabinets facing was coming off. So, this was one of the things that rather annoyed me. It's impossible for Housekeeping to have missed that. So why wasn't it fixed before we checked in? Hold that thought. We discovered the air conditioning was not working next door, where some of my adult children were settling into the adjacent suite. I spoke with the front desk who offered to move us; however, they would have to separate us, two different floors. That, combined with the prospect of packing everything back up and unpacking again, made me politely decline. "Just fix it, please." The cabinet was fixed the next day, and the air conditioner required parts to be ordered and took the better part of our stay before it was addressed. And this is where I was annoyed. The Hotel had to have been aware of the maintenance issues, yet they put us in the rooms anyway. Maybe they thought we would not notice a broken air conditioner in mid-summer or thought we might not use the kitchen cabinets during a weeklong stay. To their credit, the Maintenance guys were fantastic, polite, and genuinely apologetic. I just wished the manager had their attitude. Inside seating required a mask, and we were told you had to eat in your room. We had two rainy days, which we turned into game days. I was disappointed to find another family using the common area for their game days, snacks and drinks, and an all-in full view of the front desk with nothing said. I bit my lip and followed the rules that had been laid out to me when we registered. Back to the good stuff. The property has an outdoor basketball/tennis court and, in cooler weather, is within walking distance from downtown 1.5 miles. The pool was closed when we arrived, much to the younger kids' disappointment, but we were told they were opening it back up. They were waiting for final direction from Hilton and Health officials. When they did reopen the pool, they let us know right away. We had to reserve time slots of one hour, but it was worth it. The outdoor grills and seating were also open. In general, this is an older property with some wear and tear, and it shows. The staff was excellent during our visit. I would revisit this property.
