  When I travel I look for hotels in nice areas, location is key, well lit parking, nice and clean rooms and staff that is on point and knowledgeable of the area and property. Shawn at this location has been great! And the hotel is newer and really nice! Go outta your way to try out this location, you wont be disappointed. Thanks, Scotty.

  Modern, clean hotel about 30 minutes away from Hillsdale College

  Our family stayed here during freshmen move-in weekend this past August because all lodging closer to Hillsdale College was booked. It's an easy drive (about 30 minutes) and near many amenities in Coldwater. The room was spacious (2 queen beds and a sofa bed), had a microwave, refrigerator, ample sized bathroom and was clean. I appreciated the mirror outside of the bathroom with a shelf that helps a family of 4 get ready at the same time in the morning. Breakfast was a bit disappointing. The hot food options were unappealing so we stuck with cereal, yogurt, and oatmeal. The front desk gentleman was very nice and worked as efficiently as possible but he could have definitely used some help, especially at check in around 8 pm.

  Bring your own lamp - queen rooms have dismal lighting!

  We were so excited to start out our girls weekend (82 yo mom and 2 daughters). Our first stop for the night was Coldwater MI. We arrived and took our things to our room but needed to run out for dinner. At the time we entered the room we noticed it seemed dark in the room but it was still light outside with the drapes open and we needed to head to dinner. When we returned it was dark and we noticed 2-3 rooms that had lamps on in the windows where drapes were open. As we passed the front desk we mentioned our room might be missing a lamp and asked for one as our room did not have one and we noticed rooms as we were parking that had lamps. We were told only the rooms with king size beds had lamps! Are you kidding me?! We proceeded to our room, it was now dark outside and our room was barely lite. There was a recessed light in the entry to the room, two tiny task lights between the beds and a small task light on the desk. That was the total sum of lighting for the entire room! Our 82 yo mother could barely navigate the room and could not read her book, I could not see to knit and my sister could not read the paper!! These are simple tasks that anyone should be able to do in a hotel room. We were so frustrated by the safety issue and concern for our mother that we called the hotel next door and would have moved if they had availability but were sold out. At this point it was too late to pack up and move her but would most definitely have driven further had it been earlier. My rating for this hotel is a 1 due to the lack of safe lighting for a hotel room. To upgrade the level of lighting based on bed size is simple ridiculous and I can not ever recommend this chain for or stay in a Holiday Inn Express again due to the safety concerns for my family or myself.

  Newer hotel but POOR lighting in the room

  Close to the I69 so convenient, it was the only one that had 2 queen beds available for our stay. Modern hotel, on the newer side, "assumed" it would be okay. You've got to be kidding!! It had two small lights next to the queen beds, NO lamp near the thing that was supposed to be used for sitting .... looked like a chaise lounge but was stuck in the corner with no lighting. Couldn't read a book, the newspaper ... absolutely nothing. What a waste of space ;-( The only other light was a task lamp on the desk. That's it. No other functional space at all. I was completely shocked that a Holiday Inn, albeit an Express, wouldn't have a room well lit. Decided to ask the front desk person ... her response, after asking the manager, was the only rooms that had an extra light were the King rooms. Translated ... you're SOL. What a ridiculous answer. Tried to get a room at another hotel nearby, and would've gladly paid more, but Coldwater must have been the hotbed of a flurry of weekend activity because there were no other rooms available. Something as simple as having much better lighting would've meant a much better stay. But alas, staying in a dark unfunctional room = 1 star. This was my first stay at a Holiday Inn Express, and my last.

  Pool not in service

  I paid more for this hotel based on reviews, that it's newer, and mainly as it has a pool. We live less than 2 hours away but decided to stay as we wanted a fun pool time during kids thanksgiving break. I booked it the morning of, so could not cancel. The sales person did not tell us the pool was out of service. We were told when we arrived we had to use next door pool. A cheaper hotel. I also was told I had a suite. The only difference was the addition of a pull out bed. Not impressed. It's very cold, rainy, and my kids do not want to go out in the mess again! We'd rather have stayed home and saved our money for another 'less rainy day' for when the pool did work. There was no warning online. So, pathetic.
