A little old, but lovely spacious rooms and excellent service

We were travelling between Matsumoto and Takayama and decided to spend a night at Hirayu Onsen. The town is dead quiet in the midst of winter when we arrived, and still dead quiet when we left the next day. The ryokan is a little old, but everything was in good condition, as expected of a Japanese ryokan. The rooms were very spacious and lovely - there is a small wooden gate before the actual door to the room and a mini zen garden in the room. The room came with attached bath and toilet, and was very spacious with two separate sections - one for the futons (sleeping) and one with the Japanese table and cushion (for tea). Service was excellent, the receptionist can speak excellent English. We had dinner and breakfast there - both meals were excellent Japanese courses, and we were left very full and satisfied. Hotspring was a little smaller and older than expected. There were only 2 indoors baths and it was a little dim and foggy inside. The outdoors baths on the 2F were small as well, but the big one on the 1F was excellent. Not much of a view from either though. Overall, the facilities are old but in good condition. The only strange thing was that there were hardly any other guests in the place (perhaps because it was mid-week) and it felt like we were the only ones. We didn't even see the staff in the lobby! Walking through the corridors from the rooms to the hotspring can be a little creepy too.. There isn't much in the area except for a few souvenir shops and a soba shop down the road. The next best place to get food and snacks is probably at the bus station which is about 10 mins walk away. There doesn't seem to be much to do in the winter.

Spacious room, beautiful view, excellent kaiseki

The room is very spacious, with 3 areas, bedroom is separated from the main sitting area, so very comfortable. There are also chairs and coffee table in the room in case you are not used to sitting on the floor. The room offers a spectacular view, snowy landscape with running water, bridge, and if you are lucky enough, you'll see foxes running around. Kaiseki is very finely designed and crafted, service is good although you may want to remind them to slow down a bit in serving. Don't forget to try their recommended sake.

    Fantastic stay in Hirayukan

The Hotel is very spacious and has a fantastic view of its own garden with water fall fountain. The hotel staff and manager are very friendly!!!Hotel upgraded us and served free hide beef sushi because of honeymoon! The room is very spacious, clean and comfortable facing to the garden! Onsen switch for gents and ladies ever night after 1am. There are more than 2 open air Onsen where one of it sit in the garden. They are very nice and special! Their restaurant is amazing!!! Very nice presentation for the starter and every course was so delicious!!

    A nice experience

It has been the first time we stayed at a ryokan, and the Hirayukan turned out to be a great choice. The onsen (Japanese baths) was a really good experience as well as the traditional Japanese cuisine that we tried while we were staying there. We booked a private onsen at night and we weren't charged for it. The staff was really kind... We will repeat for sure if we're back to Japan...

Booked a room and once we got there the hotel was shut down.

We booked a stay for our 1 year anniversary back in April. After a 4 hour bus ride we finally arrived to find out that the place was shut down. After another couple hours in the rain/snow and being pushed from hotel to hotel by the management staff for Hirayukan we ended up at a place that could not accommodate us. At about 6 pm we finally had a place to stay that was very old and not what we paid for. There was no dinner as everything was booked so we ate at the only place we could find that made me sick after and there was no private onsen which is the main reason we booked this place. The worst experience I have ever had.
