An Oasis Not To Be Missed

After dark, on a cool, rainy night, regrettably without a reservation anywhere in the region, we spotted an advertising sign for "Hotel Helvie," and sought direction. Up until that point the very few hotels we could find that had rooms available were unimaginative and dingy. Then we entered Hotel Helvie. At the desk we were met by Edouard (if we remember his name correctly) who ever so professionally and warmly welcomed us and offered a lovely room with breakfast at a reasonable rate. Edouard ended up being a "brother" from Miami, where we had lived, studied and married, and graciously accommodated our every comfort related need. The room he offered was lovely, and when we shared how famished we were, and how much we hoped to eat at their outstanding restaurant (that was understandably filled at the late hour we wished to eat), he called the Maitre d', and magically found us a table. (There we experienced one of the finest meals we had eaten during our one month of travel through Portugal, Spain and France. Further, the service was equal to the best we had received anywhere on our journey. The next morning, while fearful over another "late night hotel drama," we sought the services of their concierge who was covering the desk on the morning shift (who we believe was named "Joanna"). She worked overtime to help us to find just the right accommodations for the next night while in transit to Paris. The breakfast that morning was wonderful (again with service that went way beyond any normative expectations). Thus, "Hotel Helvie" was one of the "hotel highlights" on our three nation trip, and for that we are so grateful! If you are lucky enough to spend a night in Val-Les-Bains, don't miss the Hotel Helvie "stay and eat" experience. (And please, we hope we got their names right, give Edouard and Joanna our very best!) Michael and Reine, Holderness, NH, USA

Splendid hotel in a faded spa

We have stayed in this hotel on two previous occasions. There is an excellent restaurant and our room, although small, was well equipped and maintained with a balcony and a recently refitted shower room of a good size, The town seemed quiet but it is a good location for visiting the Ardeche Gorge and travelling futher south.

    Old world charm

This is a wonderful little gem. Very old fashioned charm. Our rooms were lovely very well furnished with lots of class. Sadly we only stayed one night but slept well and woke up refreshed. The kids enjoyed the hotel pool but could of gone into the town pool next door as well. The town we think has had better days it was a little run down and very quiet in the evening. We choose not to eat in the restuarant as it was expensive with not a huge choice. We also had a fussy teenager with us who did not fancy tuna or rabbit. However we did have a drink at the very well run bar. The hotel has a front terrace and a rear terrace perfect to sit in and unwind after a long drive.

    Wonderful Staff at Hotel Helvie

We enjoyed a very pleasant stay at this hotel while touring the Ardèche. The hotel is modern, the rooms spacious and clean, the bathroom well equipped. The bed and pillows very comfortable, a true plus for me. A nice sized pool is located on the grounds, which because of the weather we did not use. The hotel has an elevator, which is useful to those who can't use stairs. I was most impressed by the staff, who were always pleasant, answering questions or fulfilling requests. We did not dine at the restaurant, only because the menu was limited for our tastes. It looked lovely and seems to be the place that the local clubs gather to host month meetings. I would recommend Hotel Helvie for families or business travelers since it is very convenient.

    Well worth the detour

We were looking for somewhere to go for a weekend away and upgraded our programme to include dinner at the hotel which was a wise choice. We received a friendly welcome from the hotel staff. The room was clean and spacious, as was the bathroom. Breakfast was great. Unfortunately, the weather didn't allow us to use the outside tables. Photo of the back of the hotel from the park.
