Nervous of Drunk OwnerThis is a very hard review to write & I am sad I have too. We had contact via phone & text from a very friendly lady regarding check in & breakfast. On arrival there were chairs knocked over in the garden & all the doors unlocked. The keys were left at reception, so we let ourselves into our room. Very quickly I could see that the room was not very clean & very tired. The trouser press was disintegrating, the kettle dirty, stained lampshades & chair, cobwebs, dust & dubious marks on the bathroom floor. After a 4 hour drive, I just thought we would make do & just clean the bathroom a bit. The linen was clean. My partner went to the car & met the owner in his dressing gown, he said he was drunk & could barely string a sentence together. This made me feel very uncomfortable. We were asked to lock the door on leaving & entering. During the night the reception door slamming woke me. I was nervous as I was unsure if the door was locked & if the owner was walking around. Breakfast was cooked by the lady we had contact with, this was lovely. The next day we had breakfast at 9am. The owner came into the dining room with his dressing gown on with no slippers. He was trying to talk but could not as he was so drunk, all the time trying to tie his dressing gown up. I felt so uncomfortable & nervous. He started crying whilst telling us his wife had died. This was very sad. I went to settle the bill &the owner came into the small reception singing 'you'll never walk alone', again I felt nervous, we decided to leave as soon as possible. I seriously question the safety of this guest house & the suitability for ladies travelling alone or children. The owner is not nasty, but clearly in a very sad place in his life.

Trip to breconWe stayed at this guest house in August...brilliant value for money,Tony looked after us very well, such a lovely, helpful and friendly chap as were the ladies in the morning that did breakfast and housekeeping...nothing was too much trouble, rooms were clean, bed super comfy, fan in the rooms which was a godsend.tony even got black pudding in especially for my husband. This was a great base for exploring brecon beacons, and all of the South Coast of Wales. Very quiet, would definitely stay again.lovely places to eat within a 10 min drive and also a large sainsbury about 5 to 10 mins away .

Lovely place, lovely staff, great stay.We were a bit perturbed by some of the booking websites saying that during Covid, Hazelwood offered no bedding, towels or housekeeping service. This didnt seem right, so we phoned and spoke to the owner, Tony. Tony was amazed by their claims and said that of course there would be bedding & towels provided and there WOULD be a daily housekeeping service (where wed stayed a few weeks before there wasnt which is why we checked) , as well as a cooked or continental breakfast served every morning should we want it. So we booked (direct with Hazelwood, not through a booking site). Im glad we did. There was ample car parking just outside the front door and Tony was very welcoming when we arrived. The room (we chose a Superior room) was large enough. It had openable windows, hanging space, a large dresser, flat screen TV, kettle etc and a king size bed. Although the pillows were a bit thin for me (and we all know how individual pillows can be!) the bed was firm and comfortable. The en-suite was stocked as youd expect and the shower was just fine sometimes water pressure is an issue but not here. Towels were white and fluffy. The continental breakfast looked lovely but we opted for the full Welsh breakfast every morning. Well cooked eggs (I like mine poached with runny yolks), sausages, beans, tomato and bacon - as much toast as we could eat, grapefruit juice and plenty of hot coffee. Just what we wanted to start our day. Tony was on reception whenever we went past and he offered us local maps to borrow and told us of places to visit in line with our interests (ruined castles, nature reserves and beaches) wed not have come across Rest Bay without his advice. The other staff we saw were all very friendly and we thoroughly enjoyed our 3 night stay.
