    Pleasant but unorganised

Stayed here with a friend for a golfing break in post Covid lockdown September. First impressions were pretty good, nice looking hotel and a brand new golf bar all in quaint village. As we tried to check in we were refused by a rather snotty receptionist as we werent wearing face masks - even though she wasnt herself!! Queuing a 15 mile round trip to the nearest shop to buy some. In our return we walked into the reception wearing our newly bought masks only to discover the staff quite happily talking to another guest who wasnt wearing one!! We wore them anyway for 5 minutes checking in and never needed them again. Rather pointless really................ I suppose understandable because of current times, but at least the staff should be leading by example, and just as strict with all guests. We had to book our meal time and place our order from the menu there and then. But first major mistake was myself and my friend (2 married men) were given a double room (2 single beds pushed together with a double fitted sheet and duvet)!! Fresh off the golf course and in need of a shower we thought wed get it sorted later as only really required different bedding. Both of us semi naked and half unpacked, our door was suddenly unlocked, opened, and a middle aged couple walked in!!!!! Wed been given somebody elses room!!!! Big mistake at the best of times, but with Covid19 still amongst us, that was a major error, not to mention rather embarrassing for us. A jaunt down to reception by myself and the couple had the problem sorted by the same snotty, but apologetic, receptionist in about 10 mins. My friend and I were given our correct room, and the couple were moved to a fresh room. Our new room was ok with parking right outside our door. The twin beds were comfy enough, the kettle, iron and tv all worked but the wardrobe was tiny and the bathroom hand towel rail had fallen off and had been placed by the sink. Relatively minor faults though. The restaurant was ok, tables reasonably well spaced out and the waitresses were friendly and attentive. The food itself is was nice enough (I had a prawn cocktail followed by sea bass and cheesecake), even if the portions left us still hungry. The bar was relaxing, had a decent array of drinks, but didnt serve any nibbles like crisps or nuts. A major disappointment for 2, still hungry lads. However the bar manager was superb and arranged a bowl of chips each for us (normally not available) free of charge as a good will gesture. Breakfast the next morning was actually pretty decent. We were given a packed continental breakfast consisting of a carton of pure OJ, a croissant, jam, a flapjack and a yoghurt - Im guessing to stop congregation at a self service food bar although the hot drinks were still self service why have one self service but not the other . All in all, pleasant enough, but I highly doubt Id ever return.

    Awful!

This hotel is in no way complying with government advice on social distancing, the bar was packed out, the restaurant had tables pushed together, none of the staff were wearing masks, the toilets were filthy and we had to wait for ages for someone to come to reception on our arrival. I came with a friend for a weekend stay and was shocked by the amount of people in the bar and restaurant!I can only assume the owners are wanting to make money rather than care about the safety of their guests, I certainly would not come again and I am surprised they have not been shut down. The food was reasonable but we felt so uncomfortable by the lack of social distancing in the restaurant it was hard to enjoy it! Very disappointed!

    One night stop over

Travelling to the Wirral, decided to have a one night stopover to break the journey. Looked at all the reviews, decided just what was needed, a bit of luxury. Greeted and directed to a parking space, very eager for us to unload, this we declined, needed to sort what we needed. A welcome glass of champagne, while we waited to be checked in, eventually shown to our room. Lovely room, just felt a little chilly. Unloaded car with help, unpacked what we needed for dinner, booked 7.30. Ran the shower for at least 5 minute, water just tepid. Dinner was delightful, service immaculate. Dining room occupied with a wedding party. Bed extremely comfy, a good nights sleep. Shower the next morning.....no hot water. Breakfast....this took one hour ten minutes! the staff concentrated all their efforts on the wedding party, who were given full treatment. When the breakfast arrived, my bacon sandwich was cold, this was returned. Settling the account at reception, reported all the grievances, told she would look into everything, not really an apology. I dont think we will return to Hawstone Hall.

    Recent golf breaks

This was my second golf break in 3 weeks at Hawkstone Park Hotel. Golf courses were great. Hotel food great. Hotel bedrooms lacked maintenance .On both stays at the hotel I experienced a broken shower plus a flooded floor in room216. On my second visit in room 207 I could not close a window and there was no heating in the room. Based on my experience it would appear no room checks are being made to confirm repairs required and undertaken. Needless to say I will not be staying at Hawkstone Park Hotel in the future. This is a sad situation when I have enjoyed my golf breaks so much in the past. John Leek leekjohm71@yahoo.com
