  A Step Back in Time

  If you're at all concerned about the present global pandemic, you may want to avoid Valentine, Nebraska. We spent one night at the Econo Lodge in late-July, and we saw zero signs in Valentine that the USA is confronting a health-crisis, zero, zilch, nada. No one in town was wearing a mask or doing anything to social distance. We had just arrived from 3 nights in Chadron St Pk (also in NE) where the entire staff was masked and behind plexiglass, and grocery stores required masks. So Valentine was a big cultural shift, as we got some pretty strange looks for donning our masks. While the data indicates that there are very few COVID cases in the Valentine region, the hotel parking lot included vehicles from Utah, Florida, and California. So, that's warning number one, if you don't like the idea of being in a community that is ignoring the pandemic, stay away from Valentine. Second, while Choice Hotels and this Trip Advisor site are claiming this facility is taking special measures to deal with COVID-19, it's hard to believe that is happening when there are no outward signs that we're in the midst of a health crisis. The breakfast bar was all business as usual: a community-access pot of sausage-gravy to poor over you grab-you-own-biscuits; make-your-own-waffle-stations; a community fridge for butter and yogurt, bins to fill your own cereal bowl, etc. This was quite the difference from the other 3 Choice Hotels we visited on our travels, where all food was pre-packaged (cereal, muffins, etc.). Even worse, one has to wonder how much care is going in to room-cleaning. We opened our microwave to heat some water around midnight, and discovered a piece of meat/beefsteak stuck to the microwave-turntable from a previous occupant. Even worse, a stench filled the room as soon as the microwave door was opened. I carried the turntable to the office to show them what I encountered. The desk clerk seemed to think it was no big deal. (See photo of meat attached.). Last but not least, in spite of our "non-smoking" room, be warned, this motel caters to smokers in ways we haven't seen for quite some time. It is an outdoor-access facility (no indoor hallways). They have set up smoking-stations (little metal buckets for ashtrays) immediately outside every-other-room on both floors of the facility, regardless of whether or not rooms are non-smoking. The buckets are set on a ledge right next to and above air-conditioning units. Based on the butts in each bucket we saw, they all get regular use. We got a good night's sleep, the linens seemed clean. The room was spacious and it seemed clean with the exception of microwave. We'd stay here again, but not without considering other options first. We don't like being around smokers, and under present circumstances, we'd like to see something to indicate that we're in the midst of a global pandemic. At least we weren't outwardly harassed for wearing our masks.

  Wedding

  We stayed here for our wedding! It was so welcoming and the owner worked with us on booking rooms for all the guests coming to town to stay! Our room was perfect and clean! The staff was so nice and the breakfast was awesome!

  Great place

  Econo Lodge is a great place to stay. I stayed there for a wedding and had no problems. A very friendly and welcoming staff welcomed me as we first stepped in the door. The entire place is cozy and very clean. It is in a fantastic location, considering Peppermill, a well-known fantastic restaurant is a short walk away. The price is wonderful, considering such a small town and great accommodations.

  Best place in town!

  This hotel is the best in town! The staff is very friendly and always accommodating. The rooms are super clean and the beds are very comfortable! I live in town, but want to get a room and stay the weekend anytime! Home away from home! Highly recommend!

  Clean rooms and welcoming staff

  No worries here for a clean and affordable overnight visit. Everything was amazing. Rooms recently remodeled. Staff at the front desk were very friendly and helpful. Easy access and can accommodate larger vehicles in the parking very well. Highly recommend.
