Room size is bigWe were checking in late around 11:15pm without notice. The onsen should be closed at 11:30, but it opens it for us until 1am. It was so touching, as we were so tired and a relaxing onsen is what we need. The room size is very big but a bit wired. It used to be a Japaness style taitaimi room, but it change to western style room. The room also has humidifier and foot massage machine. The breakfast served until 9:30am.

OK, some pluses, other minuses, better stay in UnzenStayed here thinking it would be easy access to Unzen, which it was just barely. It's about a USD 10 and 20 minute one way distance with infrequent buses at times. If you have the money, I recommend you just stay in Unzen at one of the premier hotels there, though there are cheaper public options, if you look hard enough. If you're the backpacker type try out the Tsudoi in Unzen, which has clean looking bunk beds for about USD 35. The room at the Hamakan was typical Japanese business hotel style, small but clean and nothing bad. Worst was lack of restaurants in the town which forced me to one of the three hotel restaurants, one of the dirtiest i've seen in Japan, though I didn't get sick! The "French" restaurant looked dubious and very expensive Not easy to navigate these restaurants if you don't speak Japanese, which I do. The bath itself was fine. The breakfast was not at all bad, not the best I've had in Japan but not too shabby either, and served be a very nice woman who made sure I tried her soup. All in all, think hard before you say here. Check out the options.

A mixed experienceMy Japanese friend and I stayed here as the price was good 4,500 yen per night, it had an Onsen and we thought it was an easy ride to Unzen. It was cheap, the Onsen was actually really good, but we found it difficult to drive to Unzen at night - very windy roads which were not marked very well, if at all. The room was tiny, but everything worked OK, and the view from the room was interesting. We made it onto the 6th floor viewing area for the sunset, and that was very pleasant, as the hotel overlooks the sea. The worst thing for me was the bed covers - I woke up freezing in the middle of the night, and an extra blanket I found didn't help much. The breakfast was just OK, with few choices. So, am mixed bag. Certainly worth a stay if on a budget, but if you can afford a better onsen, then I would go there!

Big Room and Good LocationBook early to get a good price. Our room faces the sea and with the balcony that is accessible, you can enjoy the cold air and watch te sunset. Check in was easy and you can park your car for an extra 500 yen. The room is more than twice the size of those standard Japanese Hotels. Hotel staff were not so conversant in English but we make do with google translate. They gave us complimentary hot spring cooked eggs. If you go to the beach opposite the hotel, you will find one of the longest hot footbath. Sit there under the shelter, soak your feet and just relax. Further down the road,to the left you could find a restaurant selling hot spring steamed sea food as in oysters, crabs, prawns and even sweet potatoes. We will go back again if we are in that area.

old place but perfectfirst impression will be "bad" but after good relax in the onsen all is forgotten. Parking available at 500 yen over night Check in fast - NO English. They have all details that you might need written on big cards in English. Room is very big. Nice varenda. However smell of smoke of cigarette. Amenities - ok. Wifi - ok The onsen is in next building so you need to pass via the reception area. Also this is old place but have big windows and if you in day time you can enjoy the view. We did not took breakfast so no comment. As it is very cheap and the target is onsen I believe it give best value
