B&B close to the ParkStaying in Volcano is an expensive convenience, with few options and 99% of them are B&Bs. Its important to have that in mind when reading (and writing) reviews of places here. First of all, I dont like B&Bs. Im not anti-social but I simply find these places too personal (sometimes, even invasive) but I wanted to stay a couple days near the park, so. This is a big house with 6 bedrooms managed by a person who lives next door. Most of the rooms have a private bathroom (not all though) but no TV and not even a chair, just the bed and a closet. All other spaces are shared: kitchen, living room, TV area and dining table. I was lucky enough to only share the house with another couple travelling with their mother/in law while I was there, so I didnt had to be too social all the time. The manager. Mahy, is very attentive but too agitated most of times while trying to provide too much information at once, but she knows the area and can be very helpful. Let her know in case you dont want to, otherwise she will knock at your door to alert the breakfast is served. Talking about the breakfast; thats a light one with briskets, half papaya, a Yogurt plus juice and coffee. The bed is comfortable but the room has no A/C. It was totally OK for last week of February but I dont know about July. Overall, recommended for a couple of nights to visit the park only a 5 minutes drive away from the house. The internet connection here is really good (20 MB/s) and totally unrestricted, so I could download my series and watch in my room before going to sleep. BTW, the GPS will get you there, but a couple hundred yards short of the correct number. Keep going and looking to the left until you see an entrance with a small brown sign with the hotel name.

Not too bad, would probably pony up a few extra bucks to stay closer next time.Got into Volcano pretty late in the evening... the evening also happened to have VOG (volcanic fog) which made it difficult to see. This place is pretty far from the main road (5 - 10 minute drive), but you really feel like you're in the middle of no where once you get there. The elevation is high so it can get pretty cool at night, as well as humid. You don't get very good cell phone reception because you're in the middle of no where, make sure that the lodge knows when you are coming!!! It's basically a very large house and you'll get a room which has its own bathroom. My girlfriend gets cold easily and there is no central heat in the house, there are portable units which are left in the hallways (not inside your room), if you close your doors for privacy you'll need to huddle under the electric blanket to stay warm. It also gets humid so everything may feel slightly damp. You are approx 15 minute drive to the front entrance of the park.... Breakfast was fairly good with fresh fruit, pastries and refreshments. The grounds around the B & B are quite nice if you feel like walking around to look at nature. There is a hot tub, which isn't always operational.. the lodge keeper was nice enough to have her daughter clean it and we were able to use it on our last night there (we were there 3 nights). There are a few restaurants along the main road, some of them pretty cool, but you will most definitely need to drive there. If you like B & B's i think you'll really like this place. If you're used to hotels then I suggest staying at one of the lodges on the main road.

Mahi (the host) rocksWe got exactly what we needed: a room, a shower, a parking lot, breakfast and silence. This b'n'b is located almost at the end of a small street in the rainforest/wilderness very close to the park. The best thing about staying here is Mahi. She loves her job and cares about her guests very well. You get valuable tips from her about the island, the park, where to get the best sandwiches for hiking and whatever else you want to know. Thank you!

This is the place for a really large groupIf you need a place for a school retreat or a large family gathering, the Halana Hale is a great place with many bedrooms, a large dining room, and living room. It is nestled in Volcano village in the farm lot area so it is nice and quiet.

We love this place! We have stayed here on each of our annual trips to the Big Island the past few years. We keep coming back because we love the quiet country retreat next to the fern forest. It feels very remote, but is only minutes from Volcano Village and the National Park. We have stayed in the house, we have stayed in the cottages, they are all very clean, comfortable and welcoming. Mahi is a fantastic host that knows the island, has great travel advice and takes great care of her guests! We will be back next year, because we love this place!
