    A very tired hotel.

Hakuba Royal Hotel is a very tired hotel that is only still trading on the demand that the nearby slopes generate. If it were cheap, it would be OK for the price, but it isn't cheap. It's not near the slopes (though shuttle buses do pass through - as they do for all hotels). It is, however, easy walking distance to the station.

Affordable mountain access but far from restaurants

Stayed here for a ski trip. The place is pretty nice for a budget hotel. The rooms are western/Japanese combos. Sparse but sufficient. They turn the heat off during the day which was a surprise. Didn't go in the hot springs but they looked nice. The have ski buses to each of the mountains right from the hotel, so access is easy. The major drawback is access to restaurants and bars. It's about a mile walk in the dark with no street lights. You can take a cab, but you have to ask the hotel to call it, and it's about $20 USD. Not horrible, but anyone staying here is probably on a budget. If you want restaurant flexibility I'd stay closer to Happa One.

    Best ever customer service

Hakuba royal hotel is a great value all rounder hotel in the centre of Hakuba. It has free shuttles to all the ski areas and is walking distance from all the authentic Japanese restaurants. We can't thank enough Kiyoshi Endo (the concierge) for being so helpful. We arrived at 1.30am. He was there to greet us and explain when we needed to be up and how to do everything we needed to do to get on the slopes asap. He was up again at 7am before us calling to organise ski rentals (with free transfer to and from the rental store) and had us out and on the slopes by 9am. All through the week we he helped us book good restaurants and New Year's Eve events. The decor is a bit dated but it's fully functional and having the free onsen in the hotel is brilliant.

    Great hotel with equal hospitality

Don't let this place fool you, it may be slightly aged but it was one of the best hotels we stayed in on our Japanese holiday Rooms are spacious and well presented The hotel staff were amazing and ever so friendly With free shuttle bus to the snow and a short walk to amazing restaurants it's positioned perfectly and only a five min walk to the main bus/train station Will defiantly be coming back

Would be 2* but for the onsen

Firstly I want to say that I don't care about hotel decor...actually the more retro the better! However, this hotel was very dated, not just in style (which as I said I don't care about), but in the condition of fixtures and fittings. Pretty much every carpet was torn or a trip hazard, the windows in our room were drafty and had inches of ice on the inside of them when we opened the curtains in the morning and the matresses on the beds were sagged in the middle. The communal areas were very cold too and very run down...there wasn't any inviting spaces to spend time in after a day on the slopes. In terms of the size of our room, it was fab. Really spacious with x3 single beds meaning we had plenty space for all our luggage and to stretch out after a day of snowboarding. We both woke up freezing cold during the night and the room overall was really cold during the day too (I read elsewhere on trip advisor that the heating is turned off during the day which sounds about right). The hotel staff were one of the three saving graces- so very polite and kind and would do anything to help you be more comfortable like getting us extra pillows and explaining the onsen and the shuttle busses. The shuttle busses to the slopes were ideal and there was ample storage for boards and boots near the exit for the busses so that went really smoothly. Third saving grace was the onsen- lovely hot pools (one indoor and one outdoor) to relax and get a heat in your bones after a mountain day or just to heat up in the hotel!!! Location-wise this hotel is handy for the JR station and bus to Nagano which we got to and from Hakuba. There's a few places to eat and drink nearby but the main groups of restaurants etc. are nearer the slopes in Echoland etc. which are about a 25min walk in the deep snow away. I wouldn't stay again just because it was so cold inside the room and the hotel, but I think with a full refurb this place could be awesome.
