Great place to stay at HakodateyamaHakodateyama Guest House is a great place to stay at. While it is slightly farther from the main tourist attractions like the red brickhouse, the view and ambience here is spectacular! If you are coming and driving during summer, it is easily accessible to Mt Hakodate for the night view. For sunrise, it is less than 5 min drive from the cape. The managers also have very bubbly personality and would answer any questions abt the attractions you may have. They also made nice recommendations to restaurants. The room i got was on the 2nd floor and had a view overlooking the Bay. Toilet and bathroom are shared but there are no cleanliness issue. A word of advice for drivers is to get a Map Code from the managers as the phone number is not registered to the navi system.

Favorite guesthouse of HokkaidoThis is a lovely home on a hill. The best time of day is at night - sit in the living room, turn off the lights and admire the view. It is well-loved and taken care of, plus the hosts are incredibly friendly. It is right around the corner from Cape Tachimachi, and also a great place to hike up Mt Hakodateyama on a good day. They have washer and dryer (minimal fee). There is a popular onsen nearby, and the guesthouse lets you bring a little basket with shampoo and soap so you don't have to buy it at the onsen. These little touches go a long way to create a sense of home. They sell some light snacks like cup noodles, curry rice and beer, but there're no restaurants around. So if you like suppers and don't have a car, do visit a convenience store before you hike up the hill. I stayed in the dorm room, but I highly recommend the japanese-style single/double room on the second floor which has a great view of the city!

great guest house...We found this place by chance online. Turned out to be one of our better stays in Hokkaido. A charming double story house. Very cosy. Up a hill so you can imagine the views. Good value, per person basis. Parking is provided. We stayed in a tatami Japanese style room with an amazing view. Lots of interesting antique decorations. Wooden theme. It has a hostel vibe. Self service sorta situation. The host is really friendly & more than willing to help. Yes he speaks English. He stays there as well. There is a fully equipped kitchen you can use. He provides beers, sodas, cup noodles & even curry rice in a packet at a reasonable price. A huge living room to hang out, read a book or meet other guests. Shared bathrooms in each floor that are clean & spacious. We spent 2 great nights there. Very relaxing from the room with the view, hearing the ocean & sipping on beers. Highly recommended.

Charming and hospitable place in HakodateI rarely write reviews, but this place I would really like to recommend! For a reasonable price, you get to stay in a cosy guesthouse with a very hospitable hostess that will explain everything you need to know about Hakodate. The view from the window was just stunning - I had to get up early to watch the sunrise. The guesthouse is not in the centre, but is easy accessible from the station with tram number 2 to the end station Yachigashira. From there it's a short walk uphill passing a beautiful temple. The location is great for exploring Mt Hakodate, I recommend to walk the way up starting from the cape just around the corner of the guesthouse and take the ropeway down. Don't miss the nice public bath just 2-3 minutes walk from the guest house! Don't worry about the shared bathrooms at the guesthouse - it's impeccably clean and very convenient. The guesthouse offers cheap drinks and noodles in a cosy joint kitchen. All in all, Hakodateyama guesthouse is the place to stay in in Hakodate if you make a stop - which you should! - on the way north to Hokkaido. Hakodate is an interesting place historically and I actually wish we had stayed longer than two days. It's well-placed for excursion in southern Hokkaido, places like Noboribetsu onsen is within 2,5 hours reach with train.
