    Helpful and friendly owner

We have booked 3 rooms and the hotel gave us the rooms on ground floor and it's really quite and private. There's only 3 rooms at that area. But we're not allow to wear shoes into the room. We've to take off our shoes and change to their slippers at the foyer then get to our room. There's no chair or sitting area for you to take off your shoes, especially for elderly, it's not too convenience. The toilet was small but it's expected in most Japan's hotel. We have a warm welcome from the owner and they're very helpful. The onsen is small but still not bad. You may find water dispenser at the 2nd floor and there's free coffee during breakfast time. During our departure, the owner came out and send us off with smiley goodbye.

    Suprisingly big room

Hotel is a bit away from city center but within walking distance. Not sure if she is the owner, but the receptionist is very helpful despite a very very limiting English. There is a public bath but rather small since the hotel itself is also not too big, they have a small library but all the books are Japanese, including Manga comics..

Not worth your money unless you pay a cheap price

When I booked a room for two nights at Motomachi hotel I was already aware that the price per night was highly overrated, but with all other hotels fully booked (alternatives which were hostels, B&B or Airbnb are not our cup of tea) I felt that I should just book this hotel so we could enjoy Hakodate. The room was spacious and has a living room, small bathroom and separate toilet. The concrete walls aren't covered, maybe it's their style but it gives a not so comfortable impression. When we came back to our room on the second evening we noticed that the sheets have not been changed and that they have left the beds untouched! I went to the front desk to complain about it and also to inquire whether we could check-out 30 minutes later. Firstly, the staff member informed me that they only change the sheets on the third night, thus in our case we stayed two nights it won't be changed. Check-out after 10 AM was not possible either. When confronting him with the question that we are paying the same rate for both nights and that it was not stated in the reservation, he just kept replying about the third night (in my opinion a very easy way out, when pretending not to understand or unable to explain otherwise). In my opinion when you're a budget traveler and get a cheap deal for this hotel, I would recommend it. When arriving at the hotel you will get a feeling stepping in a hostel. So if you are into that this will be a fine stay for you. We could have stayed in a 5 star hotel for the amount we had to pay per night. They could provide much better service and hospitality if they were more understanding of their guests. Never again will I go for a low standard hotel that overcharges you. Better to change itinerary than to leave such an hotel with feelings that we have been cheated on.

Must Go Place for Shinsengumi Fan! Cozy Clean Very nice Japanese Home like place

I am single Japanese female visit this Hotel 2015 during my Hakodate trip. The place is just so nice and cozy. I love it. People work there is all very kind and nice I really felt like right at home. The room I booked was locate main building. MY room was modern and clean, it is feel like Japanese nice single apartment like. Most of all I love the sunset view from window. The communal bath " Tonsyo no Yu" name come after the famouse Shinsengumi Higikata Toshizo use to have a HQ for his new goverment stood thie place. is very roomy and nice well as view. You can look over the Hakodate port. Well maybe some people worry privacy but I love it. Room is steamy I don't think people can look over the window while bathing. If you are Big Shinsengumi fan, this place is must go place in Japan. But even though you are not a Shinsengumi fan worthwhile to stay this small nice Hotel.

English friendly hotel in historic district

Hotel is a good 30 min walk from the train station but there is a tram line and they stop almost outside. Owner speaks ok english and will try to help with advice and directions. Room was nice and spacious but not much of a view. All of the historic areas of Motomachi are within walking distance and this is a good base to spend a day exploring. Water cooler to refill bottles. The tram line outside will go all the way to Goryukaku Tower for 270Y. It also passes by Hakodate station but does not run early hours.
