    Amazing Experience

On a two month trek through Europe, when I left France for Germany, the first place I decided to visit was Edenkoben, a quaint, well preserved medieval city, where my ancestors lived in the 1700's. Not knowing what to expect, I followed my nose down a street to Gutshof Ziegelhutte. At first impression, I really didn't know what this place has to offer, but the well manicured lawn and properties suggested the owner, Thomas pays close attention to detail and goes out of his way to really make you feel at home. Upon arrival, I found his service and staff absolutely irreplaceable. Because it wasn't time to check in, when I asked if I could leave my bags for a stroll through the city his reply was, 'Yes of course, whatever you need.' Later I found the restaurant delicious and inexpensive compared to the rest of Europe and packed on weekends - reservation highly recommended. And the included breakfast they serve was the best I experienced throughout Europe. Not knowing how many nights I needed to stay, he was flexible with the room and the rates. Really felt at home. Was sad to leave, but when I did, I felt it was more of a bed and breakfast where I could easily stay again. Note: There is a New Wine Harvest Festival held at the palace the beginning of October where if you miss Oktoberfest in Munich, can get a taste of where it originally started. Crowds of 2-3,000 Germans gather in a square and pack the courtyard drinking new wine and beer with family and friends and shop the various vendors who offer German foods and delicatessens, massage spices, and medieval souvenirs. The impression I got was this was a real locals festival where everybody drives up for the weekend with their family and leaves Sunday evening. A great treat to experience German culture and what they do for fun on the weekends.

Worked very well for me. Would go again.

A success. Very good breakfest, buffet, with hot and cold choices. Very nice and spacious breakfast room. Very plaisant and helpful hosts, including the lady serving hot beverages in the breakfast room. She made me feel welcome, even though I came down a bit close to the time breakfast was supposed to finish. She did not make me feel that I was late. All the staff is very professional, all the same. Good room. Equipments in bathroom work well. No lift, but this is only one floor to do in the stairs. About the restaurant: I went only on my second night, because I was concerned by a lukewarm review of the restaurant by a Tripadvisor reviewer. I dined there on the second night, and was very pleasantly surprised. A very very pleasant experience. I had gulash soup and the winemaker casserole ( or similar name ): beef and pork, in a wine sauce with grapes. Was really delicious. I really felt I had had an excellent restaurant experience. The owner and a very experienced lady ( experienced in restaurants and making people comfortable, you could tell ) served me. Very good wine list, with local and foreign choices. The local wine I picked was excellent. So, the premices are nice and the people know what they are doing. I would go again.

    Like a present....

Standing outside from the hotel i firstly thought oh my dear it is old dark and strange...but going into my room (castle building) i was astonished. Nice room and big bath with modern shower. Room was big enough and in castle style! Dream from my childhood came to my mind :) But the meals were very great and so was breakfast. Stayed there for one night but could be easily for more. Staff is very professional fast and nice. Whole hotel is Co² neutral. Great!

    A real positive surprise

We booked 3 rooms for 4 nights at this hotel as were going to attend the Formula 1 Grand Prix at Hocenheim. It appeared to be good value and certainly not expensive. Thus, our expectations were modest. What a surprise! The rooms were large-ish and impeccably clean - one of them actually more like a suite. The breakfast whcih was included in the price was large and of very decent quality with plenty of hot and cold items. The on-site restaurant and bar was actually of high quality - we had supper there one evening and had both fish, steak, salmon pasta and more - and everything appeared freshly cooked and certainly to our liking. They have a nice terrace too, where you can sip a pint of Engel or a drink which quite many patrons chose to do. Often you do not expect much from a medium-sized hotel far away from the big cities but I have come to learn that these locations often offer the best deals and most positive surprises. It was indeed the case here. The service was up to standards and very helpful. Indeed, when we asked if we could pack a breakfast bag or something on going to the airport early the next day, they offered to open the buffet one half hour early so we could have a full breakfast at 6 o'clock instead of 6.30. And everything was ready at 6 o'clock. I could hardly believe it. Without hesitation, I recommend this hotel and will gladly return. To end on a practical note - just a few hints. 1. There is a gas station near-by - like around the corner. 2. There is a bank (actually a Sparkasse) right outside the hotel and it has a 24/7 cash dispenser. And why is this important? Because for some strange reason, Germany is still a cash-based society. It is quite difficult to comprehend but in many places, you simply cannot pay by a credit card - so either you venture about finding ATMs after visiting a restaurant og you stock up your wallet. Remember that. 3. Edenkoben is acutally right in the Heart of the Pfalz wine country, so if you are so inclined it is easy to pay a quality wine house or two a visit and perhaps make some good purchases. 4. Logistics to and from Hockenheim from Edenkoben were impeccable, so it was no hassle to stay 50 km away from the Circuit.
