I wanted to give a 5 point rating but...... there are a few things that make this hotel less than it's 4* billing. Firstly, there is a huge difference in the quality of the rooms, so if you are thinking of booking the standard room because you think there is probably very little difference between a standard versus a deluxe, BE WARNED. Standard and Classic rooms are shoeboxes with hardly any floor space and no storage space for ski bags. Look at the room size and decide how much space you need especially if you're traveling with kids. We complained to the management because our standard room was right beside the stairwell and it was SO noisy, it was impossible to sleep/relax. The noise-proofing in this hotel is rubbish anyway (you can hear doors slamming three floors up). Add in a marble staircase and lots of heavy-footed Dutch guests shouting and whooping and there was very little decent sleep had. Also, the shower leaked, the phone didn't work and the security deposit box was broken. Simply put, the hotel room we were first given should not be used as guest accommodation. It should be used for housekeeping. 'Standard' or otherwise, it is not fit for holiday making (unless you actually like the sound of tap-dancing and drunken revelry). When we asked to be moved for the very valid reasons outlined, the receptionist said we could move to an even smaller room in the eaves of the hotel but it would cost us extra. It felt like a pointless cost when the hotel management should've been trying to make up for two nights of rubbish sleep. They ended up waiving the cost but not before the damage had been done. We were staying at the hotel when it was hosting a large work offsite for a team of Dutch co-workers. They took over the main guest lounge most evenings and made it pretty difficult for people who were not with them to relax and have a drink before dinner. One afternoon, they took over the entire hotel lounge to do first aid training. No doubt that this should've been facilitated in another part of the hotel but they managed to dominate the space. This became a bit tiresome after a while and the hotel should've done more to preserve the holiday ambience for guests. It felt like we were at a conference in the evenings. The spa is not complimentary - it comes at quite a handsome cost. I've definitely enjoyed better spas and I've not been asked to cough up extra for it. This is a failing, as far as I'm concerned. We arrived on a Wednesday lunchtime and were keen to get on the slopes. The receptionist who checked us in said that we would not be able to sort out any ski hire until after 4pm so we were better off going for a nice long lunch (she recommended L'Assietta). Thinking we had no option, that's what we did. And we had a lovely lunch in the village square - L'Assietta is well worth a visit. However, when we went to get our ski hire at Lo Sportivo at 4pm, we found out that they were actually open all day and we would've been able to get kitted out and on the slopes by 12.30 pm. When you only have 4 days to ski, it's really frustrating to lose one of them (unless it's due to the weather). Don't listen to anyone who tells you that you can't get ski hire until after 4pm. It's a fib. We had to go through our bill at the end as an extra charge had been added which wasn't valid. It's always worth going through your bill anyway but it was a bit of an unnecessary stress, coming at the end of an imperfect stay. But let me balance all this out by mentioning some of the positives. The hotel food is really good. Breakfast is plentiful, dinner is very tasty and well worth going half-board. Not that many people seemed to eat in the restaurant during our stay so it was a bit quiet, but it suited us. The Dutch party were seated in a different part of the restaurant which was good, as they were understandably high-spirited. The staff who run the restaurant and the hotel bar are very friendly and accommodating. The people on reception were helpful, despite the fact we had to have a few difficult conversations. The ladies running housekeeping were super efficient and the rooms were spotless. Luca, who runs the ski shuttle, is a real gentleman. Nothing is too much trouble and he'll bring your skis in from the van and put them safely in the ski room for you. He works so hard and is always smiling. He'll have you up to the chair lift before it opens and is always only 5 mins away when it comes to getting home. A very classy chap offering a really fantastic service. The hotel is close enough to the town centre if you walk through the very picturesque cobbled back streets, so you can take advantage of the infamous Sauze nightlife with no worries about how to get home. I think I'd go back to Grand Besson but I'd book a deluxe room away from the staircase and I probably wouldn't go half board. We realised quite late on that we were missing lots of great food and nightlife in the town so next time we'll be sure to explore more!

Avoid, hidden charges, small room, no viewsVery disappointed after booking a classic room advertised with 2 swimming pools to find on arrival you have to pay additional 35 euros per person per day to use the swimming pool, secondly the room is really very very small and the mountain views are spoiled by view of grey and red roof of restaurant. The decor is tired and marked making it look unclean, the room card was snapped and taped together, the whole place felt desperate for revenue and lacked investment (place was half empty they told us). We complained and demanded free entry to pool or we leave, the manager did not care and refused to change the position or her sour attitude. We walked out and now making a demand for refund which they are refusing. So going legal. I attach photos, nothing special like advertised. Simply avoid!!

Ski holiday Sauze dOulxStayed 8 nights at the Grand Besson during our ski holiday. This is a great hotel. A beautiful alpine contemporary decor with inviting common areas which includes a spa area accessible for a fee which ensures true relaxation. The hotel provides free shuttle service to the ski lift every day with a VIP service from Gianluca. This is an amazing perk especially if youre used to carrying your own skis through ski villages in ski boots. The buffet breakfast and service was exceptional. There was a vast assortment of choices which meant that even after 8 days there was still new options to try. Evening meals were some of the best we had in Sauze. The hotel is also conveniently located 5 minutes from the town center. Overall a great stay, amazing food, staff and service.
