One night experienceI browsed for quite abit before deciding to reside in Gloria. There was not much choices available on the internet for this town and I am totally relying on the reviews and made the best choice I can. Anyway, my plan was to stay for a night and objective was to visit the sites here. This is a resort, chalet concept. The peak seasons understood from the locals are from late May to Oct. Most of the surrounding hotels around Gloria were not in operations, is not that they have closed down. It is located next to the sea, away from the train station that is in the town center. You need to either take a bus (number 21 or 35) or a taxi (around 20 rmb) to reach the resort. I would advise that you prepare Chinese name and address of the resort in advance as the local folks communicate in Chinese. Nearest site is the Lao Long Tou (Dragon's head). The facility can be a little of low maintainence, understood that it was low season at the time I was here. Room was very basic but comfortable, only consolation was free internet connection (LAN) available in the room! Breakfast was decent with some variety, not to expect hotel standard and I am fine with that. Service staffs were alright, willing to assist. Not much entertainment in the night so maybe you may want to have a book or an early night. I think it should be different during the peak season.

A disappointing stayWe arrived at 6.00 pm having phoned in the morning to say that we would be later than our original estimate of 5.00 pm. However, we were told that only one of our rooms was still available. In the end we were offered two basic rooms in a block separate from the main hotel. The rooms were indeed basic. The toilet in one would not flush if it was used just after taking a shower and the shower in the other room was lukewarm. The decor was drab although the rooms were clean. The dining room was adequate but the food was unexciting. In its favour, there was a good range of TV channels including BBC World and the beds were comfortable.

Acceptable standardWe landed up here without any prior knowledge of the place or advance booking. Being "off-season" they gave us a big discount, with breakfast. Staff was friendly and warm. Food reasonable good. Breakfast okay with little variety. Though there were very few guests, there was a full complement of helpful staff. Sea-view room was clean and functional, though renovation/repairs are required. Wired internet worked well. Had a full view of the sunrise, which was a redeeming feature. Good enough for an overnight stay. I suppose after repairs it would be an okay place for a vacation.

Well past its best not up to western standardsThis property is all about the location, opposite a beach at the end of the great wall. However the great wall is in better condition, there is black mould growing on the walls in the bedrooms and all the fixtures and fittings are tired. The food would maybe stop you starving but the ingredients are odd although it was always cooked fresh and was tasty in a chinese version of a western dish kind of way, there was no real Chinese food on the menu just an attempt to copy other Asian and Western dishes. When requested there were no drinks available from the bar except Seven Up, no beer or other drinks, having said that there was no bar just the restaurant. I stayed for two nights and i would never consider staying here again.

Very run downStayed here 1 night which is tolerable as its close to the Great Wall and across the street from the Ocean. That is the only reason why you would stay here. Peeling paint, mouldy walls, cracked tiles, rusty faucets, ripped carpet, water stains on the walls, electrical outlets coming out of walls, wall sconces partially hanging off the wall. Advertises mini bar in room, full service restaurant, on site bar - not true. Mini bar has bottle water only, restaurant not open (except for breakfast), The bar has empty bottles of wine and liquor on display; so it looks like it's stocked. They even have 2 espresso machines but they either don't work or they don't have coffee. Service is marginal. Reception could only tell me to walk 15 minutes to see the Wall. That's it.
