    Dinner on the Road

Stayed at the hotel again and dined in it's friendly restaurant with my wife. Having enjoyed the venue on a few occasions, but not recently, it was pleasing to see continued good service and meal standards. Being an industrial city and hosting many workers/ families, meal sizes here are always on the high side. Staff are country friendly and make your visit enjoyable.

    Good location

We stayed here as stop over. Rooms are updated and clean. Bed was comfortable, shower was spacious and hot. Easy onsite parking. Friend staff. Restaurant on site however easy walk to the water front. 10 mins walk to the Auckland House new bar and restaurant on the water. This hotel also has a laundry which is handy.

    Easy access

Situated at the end of the Main Street makes it easy to find. Rooms are spacious, food it available from the bistro downstairs, which has a huge deck so you can sit and check out the views. Parking is available at front and rear.

    Disappointing

We booked here for one night on our way to Heron Island and one night on the way back. The room itself was comfortable although the bathroom hadn't been cleaned on our first visit. Food was good but service was appalling. We ordered Starters and mains. Less than a minute after the starters were put on the table (by a waitress with a face like thunder), same waitress attempted to give us our mains. I said we had only just received our starters (which I hadn't even begun) and that we weren't ready for the mains. She said she was going to just leave them on our table. I said no, we weren't ready for them and to please take them away. Waitress rolled her eyes at me stating she will 'put them over there where they will still go cold. After her leaving I approached the service counter where there appeared to be a discussion in place about my perfectly reasonable request. I was addressed in a somewhat aggressive manner by a so called manager, suggesting he and I go into a 'private room' to discuss what had happened. Ironically the only upset being caused was by the said waitress and 'manager'. I was led back to my table by this so called manager and further patronised. I asked him what his definition of a starter and mains was. He correctly stated definitions yet apparently I was meant to specify that we wanted our starters as an actual starter and not as a side dish?? We did receive a complimentary drink by way of an apology but the tone of the manager (who appears to lack any kind of people skills) was very disappointing...even more so on our return stop over where the same awkward bumbling manager approached our table. Naturally I thought he was coming to apologise again for our previous dining experience and welcome us back but instead he proceeded to reprimand my 11yr old son for slipping his feet out of his thongs under the table, letting his legs and feet hang from the chair freely without even touching the floor. My son is an impeccably behaved boy who was doing nothing but minding his own business eating his meal....then inappropriately approached directly by a middle aged man patronising him regarding his thongs not being attached to his feet, all the whilst surrounding us was a very large party occurring with children and adults of all ages walking around shoeless and children even approaching the bar. A simple word in my ear is all that was needed if really necessary....except it wasn't. The food itself was very good, although in my opinion over priced, given the setting and overall service. Reception could use some happy pills too. Same abrupt and somewhat miserable woman checked us in on both occasions. You'll be amazed at what difference a simple genuine smile or 'enjoy your stay/let us know if you need anything' can make....especially to your ratings. We won't be recommending...or returning.

    Easy going vibe

We stayed at the Gladstone Reef and loved every bit of it. Staff were very friendly from the get go. Reception ladies were Fabulous and beautiful. They had such a friendly smile and were very welcome. Food was AMAZING...compliments to the chefs! I couldn't fault our stay at The Reef. The room was amazing no dust to be seen anywhere, however I was downstairs in the car park area when I overheard the housekeeping ladies bad mouthing other staff members. I'm taking a wild guess it was about other staff members as she was talking to other workers in the reef uniforms near the downstairs gym (WHICH WAS AWESOME MY HUSBAND LOVED IT) My advise to them would be do it confidentially or go straight to your manager if you have a problem not where guest are able to hear Other than that we look forward to returning again!
