    Our first ryokan experienced

we have a nice stayed in this ryokan. The staff are friendly. The food are fantastic. Kids love with the futon bed. Location is close to Gion and Higashimaya. I did a sunrise walked to kiyozumidera from this ryokan. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay in this ryokan. Truly a Japanese hospitality at its best!

    Traditional and Friendly

We stayed here in August this year. We didn't know what to expect but hoped for a traditional Japanese experience. We got that in spades. The staff could not be more helpful and friendly. The upstairs onsen was nice as you could bath under the stars. The breakfast was a treat every morning, no cereal or fry ups here! The ryokan is well situated for most of the attractions in Kyoto, with transport links on the doorstep. This made our holiday.

    Our 1st Ryokan Experience

This was a great experience, and quite the change from our 5-Star Tokyo Skyscraper Hotel. It is a more traditional Japanese experience with futon mats for beds and a traditional group bathing room (separate M/F locations). In addition we were given a private dinner experience where they served traditional Kyoto style food that was extremely beautiful and elegant (even if we didn't love some of the flavors). The next morning they prepare breakfast in a group dining room, and that was fantastic. The location just own the block from the Chion-in is excellent, and although it's on the corner of a fairly busy street, we never heard any traffic noise. I don't know about staying here for a long trip but for a few days it's a perfect getaway.

    Overpriced, shabby and smelly...

We were really looking forward to our first Ryokan experience, and first impressions were fantastic. We were warmly welcomed and shown to our room, with ryokan etiquette of removing shoes, and wearing of traditional yukata robes etc, explained along the way. Fabulous!. However, the charm of the traditional Japanese ways were quickly over shadowed by the poor standards of a hotel that is in desperate need of maintenance and updating. The decor and facilities are old and shabby, with poor quality towels and amenities, with wallpaper coming off walls, harsh overhead lighting, and an ever present foul smell of stagnant water coming from the bathroom and toilet. The breakfast was apparently traditional, but if you don't fancy dried fish, pickled vegetables and miso soup to start your day there is no other option, than a "western style" breakfast tray of cold scrambled eggs and dry bread rolls, which was not much more appealing. Breakfast is only served between 6.30am-8.30am, which was way too early for our liking while on holiday. At $20per person, per day, you'll be better off eating out. On a positive note, the owners and staff were all friendly and welcoming, and the location is good, but at $300+ per night I'd recommend looking for somewhere else.
