Good hotel, shame about the restaurant

We stayed at this hotel for one night as a stop-off during a trans-Mongolian railway journey. The Tobolsk kremlin and old town are very beautiful and this hotel is well placed to visit them. The staff were very friendly to us (particularly Anna who speaks very good English), allowing us to check in several hours early and leave our luggage for several hours after check-out. The room was large, comfortable and clean although the walls didn't seem particularly thick - we could hear our neighbour snoring! Unfortunately, our overall impression of this hotel was diminished by the service at the hotel's restaurant. The food was decent, albeit overpriced, but the waitress was the rudest we have ever encountered - she brought us the bill before we'd asked for it (before we'd even finished eating!) and she didn't bring our change - thus awarding herself a 15% tip which we weren't willing to give. After taking the bill, she conveniently disappeared, making it fairly impossible for us to demand our change even if she had spoken English.

    Wonderfully Weird

Staff struggle to speak basic English but I'm in no position to judge as I don't speak Ruski! Overall fairly friendly, loved the opulent Russian decor in the dining room and the strangely placed jazz/80s music playing at breakfast. The breakfast is pretty good Russian fare- fill up on those salads, meatballs, fish and cabbage rolls! Tobolsk is a very interesting stop for westerners as it's off the beaten track and you'll feel like there are no other tourists around. The hotel can arrange taxis to train - don't pay more than 200r. Buy life insurance prior to getting in a Russian taxi and ensure loved ones know you've always liked them. If squeamish, wear a nappy for the journey - you'll know what I mean when you're driving down the middle of two roads and facing an oncoming truck. Fun! Go to the markets and buy biscuits from the bakery- avoid buying from the other vendors. We made that mistake an the biscuits were stale. Hotel room was quite warm and cosy to escape Siberias cold air. Weirdly eccentric shower - like stepping into a teleportation device.

    average

good for one night, very casual place, nothing fancy but it's ok, clean and convenient, staff is correct, breakfast as usual in Russia, good location.not much to say, except that you just need a mask because curtains are light if you want to sleep in the morning...

    Good location, pretty mediocre overall

I'd stayed here twice while on business in Tobolsk, last time in September 2016. The location is definitely a plus, as you are only a few steps away from the magnificent Tobolsk Kremlin. But that's basically all what you can get at this hotel. Otherwise the amenities are pretty average - and wifi seemed to be on its last legs. I wish Tobolsk had more nice hotels - the place, with its huge tourist potential and great sights deserves this after all. But in reality you get here what you get.

    Typical provincial hotel

I suspect there is not much competition in Tobolsk but this is a perfectly acceptable overnight stop. The reception is totally non-English speaking, our fault rather than theirs, but it complicated communication. Decor is in what we came to recognise as heavy Siberian style, with ruched curtains ensuring that natural light was kept out. The bedrooms were large, clean, and comfortable and the location, five minutes walk from the Kremlin, was ideal.
