    Basic comfort

This island is still devastated by a hurricane hit 5 yrs ago. Trash, abandoned and falling down homes everywhere you looked, downed power lines etc. The water and some of the beaches are beautiful, but there are no services near by any of them. Only place we found service by a beach was around Cape Santa Marie where the mosquitoes were so bad we ran for the car. I was able to keep the no-see-um bites to a minimum with Picardin and coconut oil, but I did not escape without being bitten a dozen times on the beach after snorkeling. There is no one anywhere on this island. It is almost spooky. All the resorts were empty. Mostly locals and a few fisherman at the restaurants by the marina. It appears most of the residents on this island left with no way to recover from the devastation . We had a fun snorkel trip with Teresa & Charles from Discovery Quest which made the trip worthwhile. Not tons of fish like Roatan or Playa though. Hans at Gems is such a gentleman and very helpful and the view from our room balcony of the amazing blue waters was beautiful. The meals were expensive so we opted to find food out at other local restaurants ( which there were only 2) We had breakfast made for us at Gems 2 x out of the 5 day stay which was ok. No air conditioning in the dinning room and lobby where you had to go to eat and change channels if you wanted to watch TV in your room as well. There was a bar there where you could find some drinks on the honor system, but the bar stools were so short you could barley reach the bar so not comfortable to hang out there at all. We had an upgrade to a full kitchen, but the only part of the unit that was air conditioned was the bedroom unit. The window in the bathroom would not close so it remained quit warm so we closed the bath door for sleeping. This resort needs a renovation badly. We found some bagels and cream cheese at the grocery store which was closer to the airport and had PB&J for our lunches on the beach. The Lighthouse is a new restaurant close by at the marina and it had very good food and a lovely view of the ocean. SHARKS perused the dock area around the marina , which was fascinating , but frightening. Rowdy Boys was good too, but never knew when it would be serving regular meals. The Pig roast on Fri night was fab, But another day we called and they only offered buffet for $40 per person!! We visited Max's Conch bar several times on our visit which is near the airport and my husband could not stop eating the conch salad. Max and his wife are Such nice people !! All in all we would not go back , but it was the first time in our lives we had a 3 mile powder white sandy beach completely to ourselves! Now we know why.

Beautiful spot and they will take care of you

We spent 4 days at Gems. The property is unique and our room (actually a small apartment with a kitchen) was overlooking the sea side. Such a beautiful wake up with the breeze and the sounds of the waves. At Gems you can order breakfast or meals because there isnt a restaurant in the hotel. We felt we were really taken care of because Hance and his wife provided for every need. On New Years day all the the restaurants around, and the grocery stores, were closed and Hances wife prepared for us a delicious curry chicken..Very homely..! We also had a nice boat excursion with him. One precaution: beware of the mosquitos and sun flies, there are tons of them.

    Fantastic Experience at GEMS

We stayed at GEMS in December 2019. The unit was large and had enough space for us and our 2 teenagers. It is good basic accommodations (and very clean) but what really makes the difference are the people and location. Shavonne got back to us quickly with any questions we had as part of the booking process and Hance was fantastic as part of the check in process, ensuring our unit had everything we needed on a regular basis, and also helped us with a vehicle rental issue. Jennifer provided breakfast and dinner at the front end of the our 10 night stay and has a great sense of humour (along with being a great cook). Did I mention the location? Gems is perched on a hill overlooked Lochabar Beach and had the most stunning water color and one of the nicest beaches on the island. We also did the Eco Tour with Hance and that was a highlight of our trip. He has customers at heart in terms of wanting everyone to really enjoy his island and that came through during our tour where we visited the swimming pigs, visited a secluded sandbar where we saw a stingray, stops at secluded beaches, etc. If you are looking for a quiet place with rugged beauty then Long Island is for you. The beaches and water are some of the best in the world and you can enjoy them without any crowds. This is all part of the charm of Long Island along with the people on the island - all of whom are so friendly and wave to you as you drive by. We will be back!

    Stunning Location & Hospitality

Great location and quality hotel build and furnishings. But what particularly made the stay exceptional was the personal attention afforded to us by Hance and Jennifer. We stayed on meal plan and Jennifer accommodated our requirements including vegetarian and Hance was very attentive to his guests. We stayed in the main building next to the lobby with a kitchen. A small private beach is available and a 20min walk to Lockbar beach is next door. The Bahamian hospitality is wonderful and with Hance's sailing experience we had a great boat trip through the mangrove and cays to see some wonderful locations and fantastic pigs and boars on a remote island. All in all an amazing 10 day stay - thank you.

    Amazing stay

We had a amazing time at Gems and we cant wait to go back. As the other reviews have mentioned - location is great, the views of the harbor are wonderful and the hospitality was absolutely fantastic!! It was one of the most relaxing vacations we have ever had. Cant say enough about how great Hence and Shavonne were with everything- arranging a car hire, a fabulous boat trip which included visiting with the swimming pigs! I could go on. Pictures are of the view from our room
