  Excellen value for money

  We spent one night at Gardenia during a trip through the South of Calabria, and it was simply " very good" . Although the hotel is a little hard to find - it' s squeezed in between the coastal highway and the sea and can only be reached via 2 unmarked exits and unusual underpasses - once found, it looks a bit like an oasis, with huge palmtrees and very green grass. The hotel is right on the waterfront boulevard, with a small beach right across the street and faces Sicily. If you don't like the beach, it also has an average-sized pool on the roof. Check-in was welcoming and efficient, and they went out of their way to help us fix an administrative problem. The room itself was quite large (by European standards) and had a small minibar, cable tv, a balcony with a view of Sicily's Mount Etna, a huge, firm bed, very efficient and quiet airconditioning and a very well-equipped bathroom (including jet-bath). Although the hotel was full of Italian families and the highway quite near, the room itself was very quiet. We had an excellent night's sleep, with our car parked in the gated, underground garage of the hotel (no charge). Breakfast was Italian which can be a bit of a letdown for non-Italian guests. The coffee was excellent, of course, but the buffet consisted mainly of some fresh fruit, bottled juices and a mixture of fresh and packaged cakes, cookies and sweet croissants. My kids did not object however :-) Gardenia is ideally situated for expeditions along the south coast: Reggio di Calabria's Lungomare (!) is about 30 minutes by car, Pentidatili is about 15 minutes away and Bova, Raghudi and the very impressive Aspromonte make a beautiful daytrip (just realize that the road to Raghudi from Bova is steep, narrow and terribly maintained). If you want to book, be sure to check out the different sites (esp. booking.com) as rates tended to differ a lot. We spent 100 euro per room (incl breakfast) which meant Gardenia was excellent value for money.

  Pristine no personality hotel

  A fairly new hotel directly opposite the straits with clear and close views of Mt Etna. Spotlessly clean, staff helpful, altho a little reserved, after the little family-run places we had been staying in. Our room was beautiful and the spa bath most welcome after a very long drive. The view was an unexpected bonus, but the 5 Euro parking charge was unnecessary, as it is easy enough to park on the lungomare outside. Not sure if it was because it wasnt quite in season yet, but there was no restaurant on the premises, and we were told there was one we could use 900m along the beach. We didnt get that far, because there was a perfectly respectable, quite upmarket restaurant 200m from the hotel. Breakfast was a bit sparse. Starchy but does the job for a good price.

  Gardenia Hotel

  I think that we were likely the only couple at their hotel, but it was well organized. A pool, restaurant, very high tech lights and room security. Right across the street from the Strait of Messina and views over to Mount Etna and Sicily..

  A friendly place by the sea

  I must first comment on how helpful the staff were in this family run hotel. My room had a small terrace looking across to Sicily and Mount Etna which was a bonus. The room was comfortable and well appointed and the breakfast very good. I was visiting out of season and like many resorts there is not too many places open. My host's family also has a restaurant, El Faro, about 800m along the lungomare and on his suggestion I went there. I was not sure about time to dine as I have found 7:30 in some places 8:00 in others in Italy. No problem he called ahead at 7:30 and I was met by the host and treated to an excellent dinner. Overall my experience was excellent.

  A nice stay

  Very nice hotel managed by family members. Very nice, clean rooms well equipped. The waiters are very kind ... no problem.. In the room WiFi air cintiniones.. the beach is across the street 3 min walking, not sand as in all coast. The sea is fantastic.
