Beautiful Hotel and One Big Misunderstanding

This hotel is beautiful and special. The feeling is comfortable and modern. The staff is attentive and alert. The rooms overlook bamboo and water with a wedding chapel in the middle. The rooms are well appointed and sleek. It is a 10 minute walk from the JR station. We were not informed that there was a shuttle bus from the station yet did take advantage of the shuttle bus back to the station. When I made the reservation with the hotel, they stated that the room was 18,500 for one person. I replied and said we are two people and what is the rate. Later, I sent an email and confirmed that dinner was 7650 yen per person and that the room was 18,500 yen. They seemed to confirm. At checkout the room charge was 37,000 yen, 2 times what I was expecting. The was not clearly communicated to me and I was shocked. I have marked this up to a translation and communication error. MAKE sure you confirm what you will be charged. NOTE to HOTEL: please confirmed the exact charge for your rooms in a confirmation. Most hotels in the world do not charge 2X the base rate for one extra person in the room. That is outrageous. it is unfortunate that the last ten minutes of my stay at this hotel were so frustrating. Please be very specific about your charges when reservations are made. This hotel was 3X the rate of most other hotels in town on the particular night that we stayed.

Nails the Modern Urban Hotel Idea!

This hotel is cool! It was our last stay at the end of a very enjoyable 2 weeks on Kyushu. We had already experienced a gamut of lodgings (traditional ryokan, onsen resorts, and business, boutique, and big international franchise hotels), so we were open to something a bit different. We had read about and experienced the modern urban hotel idea in Europe: placing a building with modern style and construction materials in an older urban setting while incorporating elements of nature. We stayed at such a place in Zurich, and while it was okay, we probably would not return. However, should we return to Miyazaki, we cannot envision staying anywhere else other than the Garden Terrace, in fact, if going to Nagasaki, based on our Miyazaki experience we would definitely check out the Nagasaki Garden Terrace too. This hotel is a modern design with only 2 stories. The first floor consists of front desk, reception, courtyard with pond, 2 restaurants (1 slightly elevated teppanyaki-counter style with a view into the courtyard and the other French theme with a window into the kitchen), wedding party rooms, and super modern wedding chapel that cuts through the courtyard diagonally and slopes slightly upward. Wedding venues are a big business in Japan. If you are looking for a unique destination wedding spot, give this place a good look. Note, no wedding took place on premises during our mid-week 2-night stay. A true boutique hotel, there are only 12 guestrooms, all on the second floor. There is an elevator. The guest rooms are good size. They have high ceilings, are finished in light woods, contain complimentary beverages in a refrigerator, and offer high-tech electronic amenities. Elegance and Scandinavian design spring to mind. A separate toilet room is by the room's entry door (also high-tech). In the rear of the room is a bathroom with sink and mirror, and Japanese traditional style separate shower/washing area and big bath tub. Also on the second floor of the hotel is a shared lounge that opens at 4pm and offers complimentary healthy snacks, finger foods, and various beverages. We ate dinner in the Japanese restaurant and breakfast in the French restaurant and were very pleased with both meals. The hotel sits in the middle of a neighborhood, with other commercial properties and mixed residential (some high rises) close by, as well as a raised local rail line. The hotel incorporates a line of surrounding bamboo and small trees outside, plus bamboo used inside and in guest rooms. Small trees and pond are in the inner-courtyard. Service was very good, greeting and seeing us off, coordinating meals, and setting up station shuttle rides. When queried about the staff's English skills, they said they could handle common questions, but that more detailed questions might be harder to answer. At check-in our room was upgraded from standard to deluxe twin. In addition to being bigger, it included an outdoor under the sky 2-person Jacuzzi and a deck with wide bench and view into the courtyard. The architect got this one right! It is a modern oasis in an urban center. Miyazaki is not exactly Dickensonian, in fact it feels more like a big small town, but the Garden Terrace is a beautiful building in contrast to the neighborhood chaos around it, a fantastic place to rest, and appears to be a superb spot for a wedding.

    Best hotel stay in Japan!

Travelling at high-end hotels for ten days, this was by far our highlight! This design-forward hotel stands out in every possible way. Service is impeccable; rooms are spacious and design-forward; breakfast was a culinary experience; lounge has complimentary wine, beer, snacks, etc.; and on an on. If you are in the area, don't look anywhere else!

    Perfect Stay!!!

This is by far one of the best hotel in my travel "career", i had been to all those 5..6 star luxury hotels around the world but Garden Terrace is giving me a feeling of.....i can't describe. It is not one of those Luxury type but the design is definitely one of the best..the service was also perfect! Breakfast was great, too bad i didn't have chance to try their dinner.
