The best holiday ever. The apartment wasn't far from the ocean which saved us petrol. The shops were also not far

The apartment wasn't far from the ocean which saved us petrol. Also the shops were close by which made our shopping easy as we walked. The staff were friendly and willing to be off any assistance. I'd definitely wouldn't mind staying there for my next visit

    A really mixed experience

The location is perfect for anyone working at the Olive Convention Centre straight across the road, as I was. However... There was some dirt on several surfaces in the bathroom when I arrived which was still there four days later (muck that had clearly blown in from open windows and settled) when I just gave in and cleared it away. I thought there was an immobile cockroach in my shower after I had been there for about a week, but it turned out to be several days worth of my hair, not cleaned out of the shower outlet, that had washed back into the shower and accumulated in the shape of a horrible creature. The maid service was atrocious (I could go on with a long list of examples, but wont), but I do believe that I was just unlucky with the maid assigned to my room and the housekeeping supervisor promised faithfully that she would be thoroughly retrained. I was there 10 nights altogether and apart from the maid service and one dinner when we waited a ridiculous length of time for food, most things were OK. On the bright side, the staff were almost universally friendly and very helpful, but there is no avoiding the fact that the hotel is old and showing its age. Some things have been updated in my apartment (bedroom, tiny but adequately fitted shower room, and a combined kitchenette/dining room/sitting room, along with loads of storage space) the kitchenette was perfect fully equipped, new, clean and shiny, the shower room had clearly been recently redone , the bed was comfortable and the bedding hotel-quality, but the sitting room furniture was disgusting - old, dirty and the leather/leather-look sofa was peeling away all over. I wouldn't even sit in it. The place was such a mixture of really good and really bad - new shower room and kitchenette, revolting old sitting room furniture and rug, really bad maid service and terrible restaurant service that one night, but lovely, friendly restaurant service the rest of the time and friendly, helpful reception staff. A real mixture. There were massive tropical storms for much of the time that I was in Durban and if you are working at the Olive Convention Centre, the Oceanic is the closest place to stay, so its really convenient and you will stay drier than staying anywhere else, so you take the rough with the smooth.

    TERRIBLE

Do not ever stay at this hotel! They are very unorganised, the staff are all equally confused and useless. My client who booked me in the hotel made prior arrangements, for which we received different and conflicting feedback on the day of arrival. In this regard, the Manager that was on duty at lunchtime on 26 November 2019 (unfortunately I cannot recall the name) is extremely rude, and spoke to us in an unacceptable manner. Early check-in was arranged, however, I was kept waiting from 12pm to 3pm which is normal check-in time. When I was finally able to check-in, I was only then told that the person who booked and paid the room needs to be present (something that could and should have been communicated sometime during the hours that I waited). This further delayed my checking in. Even after having so much time to get my room ready, the toilet was still dirty with marks of the previous person's poo and the one pillow still dirty. That's not all, just after 11pm, I found a massive cockroach running around in my room around the bed. I immediately called reception asking for it to be sorted, just to be told they are sending security. After waiting 20minutes,I receive a call that housekeeping is closed and they cannot find doom spray. After telling them I don't care, they need to sort it out, I continued to wait. By 12h05pm I was still waiting. To the point where I was able to sort it out myself and let them know to just leave it. Completely unacceptable services, and disgusting ito hygiene.

    Bad First Impression

Booked 2 rooms. The reception only managed to pick up 1 booking on their site. After much delay, confusion and frustration they managed to trace the second room. Caused great inconvenience to us. I travel a lot and for the first time had to pay such high fees for parking on the premises. First impressions last and mine was definietly not the best

    OK stay

We arrived to Durban after spending a week in Cape Town and that was probably the reason why we did not enjoy our city experience as much as we could - we compared everything with CT. So the hotel room we paid for aproximately the same price as we did for two level apartments in Cape Town was pretty basic with several noticable disadvantages. To be fair I'll start with pointing out the perfect location - only few minutes away from the beach and the promenade. The area itself is calm and safe which is very important cuality in Durban. The hotel and the room were not in the best shape. They were not bad, but more like a bit "tired". The room was rather big and concised of bedroom with dicent bed and spacious wardrob. There were another closet in the living room and huge sofa in fromt of TV screen. What was disapointnig is lack of coziness. Kitchen kit did not have some pannels and even some floor tiles. Dirty windows did not bring additinal charm. And the noisy parties with loud local music around the pool were annoying. The staff was polite, but I had a feeling they had always been some kind of uncertain how to comunicate with us. May be because they do not have many tourisits from Europe.
