Sloppy service due to lack of supervision, management and leadership

We have had excellent stays at Fernhill in the past. However, we are just back from a very disappointing three night stay. The room was warm and spacious, with two armchairs and an outfoor balcony, though a bit dated. However all the staff in the dining room, though personable and chatty, seemed to be students, with no sign of managers and more experienced staff keeping a check on service. The food was dulla nd pedestrian with little flavour. I had a chicken terrine as a starter one night, it had been made in a loaftine lined with ham. However I got the end bit which comprised a small slice of ham with no terrine, and nothing to spread on the three oatcakes. After being told that a flat white coffee was available a black coffee arrived. The following night we were told that "Gregor can't get the coffee maching to work". The service was consistently slow and often not pro-active but only reacting to requests, dirty dishes were left on the table at breakfast. We were told that because of covid, there was a one-way system which involved leaving the hotle at one end by a fire escape and walking round the hotel outside and then into the bar and dining room reception area, however on doing this half and hour before our dinner reservation to have a drink in the barm the door was still locked, adn we had to retrace our steps back round outside the hotel to alert the receptionist to phone and remind staff to unlock the door to the dining room. When leaving the dining room after dinner one night we asked to make our breakfast reservation, which we had been told was necessary to ensure that people arrived at staggered times to facilitate social distancing, however a "new start" assured us that we could come at any time when breakfasr was served and clearly had had no initial training. Of more concern is our assumption, based on our experience, that the cleaning of the rooms between guest is of the same poor standard, with no supervision, which in with covid 19 still so prevalent, constitutes a significant publid health risk.

    Disappointed return visitor

Booked a 5 night stay for my sixth visit to Fernhill, but left after 3 nights as so disappointed - still charged for the full 5 nights. In the dining room I was unhappy with the service and the food was often mediocre - small portions, restricted menu, dearth of vegetables, uninspiring presentation. No fresh fruit salad or croissant for breakfast and no canapes or bread roll + butter for dinner this year !. Sent an email to Management on my return to express my concerns; the response only reinforced my decision not to make another return visit to Fernhill.

    Lovely Stay

We were a little apprehensive having read poor reviews since booking. We needn't have worried we had a superb 3 days. Hotel is in a perfect location, our large room was so comfortable with a wonderful view We enjoyed the food the very pleasant staff worked so hard ( can't be easy with masks on) Very clean hotel, felt very safe, covid has meant they have had to change & adapt, we felt fine with it all. We will return

    Gone downhill

My wife and I have stayed in this hotel four times before and it used to be a good experience, sadly not now. Yes, Covid is an issue but good hotels will try harder and do better than lessor hotels and sadly Fernhill is very much in the latter class. Once hearty breakfasts are now decidedly mean - I've never seen haggis and black pudding sliced down to 1/8 th of an inch. I understand when they say "due to Covid, we're not cleaning the rooms...." but in addition to providing such poor service, they nonetheless charge their normal full high season prices. We were there for 4 nights, total bill was close to £1000 for really nothing better than 2-star service. Sadly, I feel decidedly ripped off. Will I return? Not unless I see evidence of improvement.

    Wonderful views

Had booking error by Booking .com. Ended up with three different rooms for our three night stay but problem was rectified swiftly and efficiently by staff. Rooms were large and comfortable with fantastic views especially ones with balcony. Disappointed with food especially breakfast. Bacon and small sausage pale and unappetising. Hotel very clean and covid restrictions in place.
