    Value for Money Hotel

The reviews point to one thing- its old but its clean. But with the Agoda price of just about US$ 60 a night, I took the chance. Hotels in Taipei have been very pricey nowadays and a clean decent hotel on good surroundings with a free buffet breakfast is worth a try. While the building is outdated, the corridors, bathrooms and lobby have been refurbished. The room is really clean, forgot about the furniture which is really outdated. Room smells clean and fresh, despite the old stained carpet. Beds and pillows are very comfortable. This hotel is frequented by Japanese tourists, so the breakfast is a fusion of Chinese, Japanese and American; a bonus for the price you paid. The area is very nice, with small restaurants, supermarkets and a street food area where you can try authentic Taiwanese local food. Its about 10 minutes walk to the nearest MRT station, so going around is easy. While wifi is only available at the lobby, it is super fast by Taiwan standard.

Taipei needs to step up its hotel game

This hotel is alright. I stayed here for almost a week over Christmas and New Year's. As most people indicate, it's a good value for the money. Compared to other hotels that are overpriced relative to the value, it's actually a pretty good deal. Here you won't find a flat-screen TV. You won't find good towels, and you won't find key cards to enter a room. You won't find a good breakfast, and you won't find smiling service. But what you will find is a tolerable, clean, and climate controlled room. The shower/bath in my unit was recently renovated to Western standards, and was pretty clean. The hotel has an AMAZING location. Close to the NW quadrant of Taipei proper, it's close to a lot of awesome food, shopping, etc. Would not recommend for vacationers. This is a utility type of spot. And no wifi, save for the lobby. Don't be fooled by anyone saying otherwise.

Even in China, the hotel rooms had wifi

The Empress was probably awesome back in the day, but it's in serious need of a renovation in order to compete with modern hotels. If you're looking to stay in an old hotel that lacks all the interesting stuff about being old, this is your place. Pros : Bathroom had a bathtub, which was sort of cool. Checkout was easy & fast. Location was pretty good. The bed was mediocre at best. Wish the room had heating of some sort - even just a little would've made a lot of difference (it wasn't all that cold, just enough to be uncomfortable). Cons : There's a reason the breakfast was free : they could probably violate some sort of law for charging for it. The orange juice was so horrific I feel the need to make special note of it. I noted the lack of available electrical outlets. One had a modem plugged into it, but I couldn't make the modem work with my laptop, nor did the room itself have wifi (only the lobby did). I would list this as "low range" rather than "mid range."

    Good local 3 star hotel

Location is convenient. The airport bus 1961 drop off is 10 minutes walk to hotel. Yuan Shan subway is also nearby. Hotel is well located with the wonderful Expo Park and Maji Center to explore. Breakfast with local items is absolutely adequate.

    Reasonable and Calm Hotel

Empress Hotel is located near Tatung University and it takes 10-15mins from Minguan West Road station of Tansui-Xinyi Line. From Taipei station, I recommend to use taxi. This hotel is not large and elegant but reasonable. Then it is suitable for business use. Room is a bit of large, comparing with other business-type hotel in Taipei and clean. There is a few restaurant around this hotel but "ShinYeh Original Restaurant" that is famous restaurant is very near. (It takes 1-2mins on foot) You can enjoy Taiwanese food here. Overall, I like this hotel.
