fab Locationperfect hotel half way up the mountain, ski in and ski out, good boot room and 2 ski shops just behind the hotel, 4 of us had amazing week here, good service, good food with very nice bar, Hochsolden is a quitter area but there are plenty of busy bars just above on the slope or go down to the main town, Solden

Ski dreams are made of thisThe Edelweiss is a lovely family-run mountain hotel right on the piste. The first thing that hits you on entering is the smell of wood in the stuben and bedrooms, which we were told encourages relaxation and sleep. Our suite on the second floor had a gorgeous sappy smell and we relished returning to it. We had views over the mountains that had me race to open the curtains each morning. There are few dedicated reviews of Hochsolden, the Ski and Snowboard Guide gives it hardly a mention. Maybe that's a good thing? This was our fifth time skiing in the Otztal valley and we wanted to try a longer visit to the Solden area having skied it for the day previously. It's quite an adventure climbing the single road from Solden to Hochsolden at 2,090m. It is high and our hotel advised us to empty a little from our toothpaste and shampoo bottles before ascending the mountain. If you don't have a car - we didn't - you can travel to Solden on skis (see below), or there's little taxi-bus service that runs five times a day to and from Solden departing from the carpark opposite the Schone Aussicht hotel. It costs 3 per person each way. Ask the hotel for a timetable. One afternoon I hopped a lift to town with one of the ski shop van drivers. Sport Brugger rental shop is the most convenient for the hotel - across the road - and also has a ski school office, you can also buy your ski pass there. But really, being away from it all is the reason to stay in Hochsolden, rather than an inconvenience. It's wonderful to live in the mountains. The hotel looks across to Hochgurgl and up to the Ice Q and on New Year's Eve could see fireworks all around us. The hotel is truly ski in ski out, situated on to a branch of red run #19, which is also the continuation of black run #20. A few turns down the mountain and you are at the two-man C38 Rotkogl chairlift which takes you up to the Giggijoch bowl and a access to the rest of the resort. Or you can ski all they way down the red #19 which becomes the red #21 or black #22 to Solden town. From there you can catch the ski bus to Obergurgl and Hochgurgl, which are on the same ski pass, or take the Giggijoch gondola back up the hill. I'd read about the tricky return route to the hotel and I was a little apprehensive. And yet, I skied back successfully every afternoon. For timid intermediates, I'd recommend saving a little energy for the last leg. You have two options: there is a wide and busy black run - easy enough if you use the full width of the piste. The red is wider than it looks at first. Most people take the narrow ridge, which can be icy and crowded. Be bold and try the left hand side of the piste which banks at an angle. You can sideslip all the way down to the path that bends right, joining the black, next to the Sonneblick restaurant - which is worth a visit for lunch. A short schuss across to the hotel and you're in the boot room and heading to the bar for your ski tea! The hotel's good-sized wellness area contains a sauna, two steam rooms and a herbal room, and a large relaxation space over looking the piste. I enjoyed the waterbeds. The pool is good for a stretch, but is a little small for lap swimming. I didn't use the gym but it had a decent selection of aerobic machines and a coin-operated massage bed. The staff were universally kind, friendly and efficient. We enjoyed the dinners - nothing radical, everything was simply and well made - and breakfasts were the usual range of fruit, cereals, cold cuts etc with eggs made to order. We went to bed every night tired and happy, looking forward to our next day's adventure. Do visit Gampe Thaya for a hot chocolate near the bottom of red #1. And Ice Q is fun for lunch with a view followed by long reds back to the C31 Langegg chairlift. Hochsolden is lovely, and the Edelweiss is a treat, go!

Hard to faultMy second stay here. This hotel wins hands down for skiing convenience with 2 major lifts directly adjacent to the hotel and with a large ski shop in the basement. Rooms are clean and pleasant although perhaps a little on the small side. Stayed half board and was very happy with the food. Fish, Meat, Veggie options every evening. 4 courses with excellent salad started and cheese and dessert counters. Breakfast was a deligt - especially the cooked to order eggs by the bi-lingual chef - never did work our which was her first language. Staff very friendly and helpful in restaurant, bar and reception. Hotel was very happy to meet a request for Haggis on Burns night for our group which was a super touch. We made the billing very complicated but they sorted it all out brillinatly and apologised although it was most definitely down to us!

Strange place not value for moneyGreat position for skiing, nice room with balcony but quite old forniture. Nice SPA and massages. Overall the Hotel is perfect but the service is not adequate to the price. For example after midnight you cannot find a bottle of water or get a tea and you cannot go somewherelse because you are in the middle of nowhere. In addition the personnel is very cold and unfriendly. The only one that was friendy and talkative is Jenni. She is the only thing we will miss. Next year we will come back in Solden but surely in another hotel.

A perfect retreat in middle of the ski resortI have stayed several times in the top hotels of Soelden - but very much prefer the Edelweiss for a simple reason: it is the most stress free ski vacation you will find there. Ski shop just across the only and quite steep road in Hochsoelden, Ski in/out, excellent pool+sauna with great views, lots of food and exceptional silence for a good nights sleep. This is the antidote to the usual ski resort party culture and therefore perfect for anyone who wants to enjoy the alpine atmosphere and get away from it all for a few days of vacation.
