Old and VERY tiredWe visited Siem Reap this week on a trip organized with CTrip. I was a little concerned when I heard that of all of the possible hotels CTrip listed we were indeed going to be staying at the Dragon Royal which has not received the best of reviews here on tripadvisor. The hotel is situated about as far from the centre of things as possible, it is old and tired although clean and that for me is a huge plus. It is set up entirely to cater for the Chinese tour market and, as the only Westerner on the tour, this jarred a little when it came to breakfast for instance, which was decidedly Chinese in both content and guest behavior. When we arrived in our room it was to find that the toilet seat was broken off, had been nicely cleaned and then simply laid at 90 degrees to the toilet itself as if this made it ok... There are no facilities as such, the "bar/coffee shop" has the appearance of never having been used in a long time. No coffee or milk in the rooms. Very poor wifi and little or no interest from front of house staff. The hotel advertises itself as Four Star and perhaps it was many many years ago but now it barely deserves Two Star rating in all honesty. Having visited other hotels in Siem Reap where you can get true Five Star facilities and treatment for very little money I can only advise that you give the Dragon Royal a miss.

Clean, spaciousLocation is so so, on the road end of the "hotel street". Room is clean and spacious. Free wifi at lobby, if in the room signal is really weak. Air con works well. Hotel has a swimming pool open till 9pm, but saw guests still swim after 9pm. Buffet breakfast is included in room rate during our stay. Food tastes so so. Staff are friendly with limit English communication. Overall, good and comfy stay.

Nice room but small poolA beautiful hotel and excellent breakfast . The minibar was also very reasonably priced and the WiFi was good through out the hotel. The staff were pleasant although we did not have a lot of interaction Altogether a good value hotel. The pool was very small but nice. Tuk Tuk driver always waiting in front of the Hotel. It just $3 to go to the Pub Street Down town

Nice and simpleDropped in, no reservations, and well cared for. English was a slight barrier, and wouldn't take a $100 US bill with a little crinkling in it. Pool was small but nice. We had it to ourselves (about 8 of us) and one of the staff was on hand to provide keep us stocked in peanuts and cold beer. Nice way to unwind after a day of touring the temples.

4 star expectations 2 star resultsAll indications online supported a 4 star hotel. Shortly upon arrival our dreams were smashed. The issues just seemed to snowball. I asked about the darkened bar behind me, regarding the bar hours. I was sheepishly told the bar was no longer in service. I figured the pool bar touted online would suffice and let the issue go. Turns out the hotel surrendered its license to sell hard liquor as well at the pool bar. We were informed that we could have a beer though from pool cooler to our hearts desire. Unfortunately the manager kept coming by and unplugging the cooler, So the beer and soda were always warm.lights were always left off throughout the hotel in an obvious attempt to reduce the electric bill. Upon jumping in the pool I nearly had a coronary from the frigid water. When I asked about turning up the heat, I was told the pool has no heater. I suspected a falsehood and spotted the pool heater behind the pool fence, obviously shut off. Attempted to order a massage at the spa. You guessed it, spa closed some time ago. Attempted to order western food from room service menu. Menu no longer available I was told. Rice and Noodles was our meal of the day. Supplied Breakfast was horrendous and always cold. Advertised as a buffet. But no fuel is used to keep the food warmed. Fiance' and I got ill twice. Air-conditioner in room failed. They get points for this because it was fixed promptly. I will say that the staff kept a kind attitude considering the apparent writing on the wall. I worked hospitality and know a business on the way out. Unfortunately I paid in advance and we decided to stick it out. The booking provider did research the complaints I mentioned and refunded a sizeable portion of our fees. Kudos to them. This hotel is really a 2 star. Just be forewarned.
