    Hermoso hotel

A nice hotel, but not quite worth the money: avoid staying in the Town House if possible

My partner and I stayed here for a weekend in December. The location is fantastic and its a stones throw away from the city centre and makes it a perfect base from which to explore. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, and clearly were working very hard to ensure that all guests were kept as safe as possible during these challenging times. The food was also lovely: we ate in the restaurant one evening and had breakfast both mornings. There was a good selection of cooked options; I felt that it would have been nice to have had the choice for cold meats for a continental option, but thats possibly personal preference. We were allocated a room in the Town House building, which is separate from the main hotel. At first, this seemed like an added bonus as it meant we were away from the usual business of a city centre hotel. However, we found the room less than ideal. Although the room was clean, we found it a little dingy as the lights werent very bright. Trying to get ready for an evening meal was difficult as even with all the lights and lamps on, you couldnt really see much. It was also quite loud. Its clearly an old building, meaning the walls were paper thin, the floors were creaky and the doors slammed shut. I could hear the conversations in neighbouring rooms and people moving around, which was quite disruptive late into the evening. When we arrived in the room, the heating had been left off, meaning it was quite cold and uncomfortable. It took a while for us to figure how the heater worked and for the room to get to a nice temperature. The stairwells in the Town House are also incredibly narrow, which made carrying luggage up and down quite tricky. Overall, if we were to stay at this hotel again, wed definitely avoid the Town House and seek to stay in the main hotel building - although I have no idea what those rooms are like. Either that, or wed opt to stay at the Hilton hotel, opposite Cliffords Tower. Although our experience of the room was offset by the lovely staff, food and experience of York itself, it certainly wasnt worth the £193 price tag for two nights.

    Mini break

My husband and I stayed here for 1 night as a mini-moon as we couldnt travel abroad for a proper honeymoon. I had let the hotel know this on booking however was disappointed it wasnt mentioned on check in which would have made it special for us. We were told we would be allocated a quiet room however it was right next to the lift so could hear people coming in and out, and could also hear people on the street talking late at night. Staff on reception were very helpful and provided good recommendations for local restaurants. We were also allowed to check in at 12pm as our room was ready which was great. Parking is steep at £20 for the night. Hotel is in an excellent location though, town centre is just around the corner. We also ordered an ice bucket from room service which took half an hour and 2 phone calls. Room was ok but basic for a deluxe. Bed was huge but pillows were too soft. TV is huge but this means there is no room for a make up area. I had to move the larger seat to face the big mirror however the lighting was inadequate. Also I had to move a side table to allow my plugs to fit into the sockets. Lighting in the whole room was quite low. Had balcony doors which opened about 2 inches which was disappointing and a waste of a lovely view. Breakfast was lovely and tasty. Ordered via a tick sheet and served promptly by lovely staff. Check out was 12pm which is later than most hotels which was great. Would definitely stay here again but wouldnt bother getting a deluxe room as it didnt really offer anything extra than a standard room.
