Good business hotel; convenient to station; nice baths

Stayed here for a race in November. Transportation is very convenient, about 5 minutes walk from JR Station (Shinkansen to Tokyo in less than 2 hours). Near the station there are many restaurants; recommend a Korean option just under the arcade. The baths in the hotel are excellent and the adjoining lounge includes draft beer and free noodles from 9:30 to 11pm. Nice touch. Recommend visiting Aizu-Wakamata region for excellent views of the countryside. Kitakata has over 110 or Ramen shops.

Great service and value in Northern Japan

Due to family in the area, I've now stayed at the hotel for 16 days, the longest I've ever stayed in a hotel! What it's best for: good value (you pay upon arrival for discounted rates, which is unusual in Japan); clean comfortable rooms; nice, gender-separated communal baths for men and women; terrific location; go-out-of-their-way staff that manage English guests well. What it's not: a luxury hotel with room service, or a hotel that has much personality it's a contemporary "business man's hotel" (brown/white decor) akin to a Fairfield by Marriott perhaps. Breakfast is extra, but a good value at around $11-12 US with plenty of choices that work for a Westerner. Koriyama itself is a wonderful destination, the travel hub of the area served by the bullet train and local trains that go in every destinations, making it easy to visit popular cherry blossom viewing sites, the Edo (samurai) era town of Aizu-Wakamatsu, the area around Lake Inawashiro (fascinating caverns near Mt. Bandai, hiking, winter sports), and ocean-side Matsushima, one of the three famous views of Japan. Koriyama is about 1.5 hours from Tokyo by bullet train, and Nikko (with its World Heritage Site shrines) can be reached within 2 hours. Food in the area is excellent, famous for its fresh produce. (Daiju, at the end of the block going away from the train station, is excellent, but no English is spoken. The front desk might be able to help identify menu items in advance by phone.) Koriyama itself has two wonderful museums, many significant shrines, a river, mountain views, one top-tier department store (Usui -- be sure to check out the lower level with food shops), lots of parks and an attractive downtown. It is indeed a short walk from the train station, which has dozens of shops, restaurants, an import grocery story and two Starbuck's for the coffee deprived. Special appreciation to Ms. Nozaki (I hope I got that right) who was extraordinarily helpful at the front desk. All of the staff work hard to please and were kind despite my lack of Japanese. A tip about Japanese communal baths: if you're a little shy, go when the baths open. There's usually no one there, and the submerged recliners in the hot bath is well worth the effort. There are clear pictures with English explanations about what to do (and not do) prominently posted in the bathing area.

    Excellence Location with Good Breakfast

We stayed total 7 days in April 2017 for Cherry Blossom and continuous 5 days stay. We had past experience stay at Dormy Inn in other cities in Japan, good delicious breakfast, public bath, relax area with lot of comics. And the location is good and close to Koriyama Station. And we reserve a room at 20 square meters and the room size is really big enough. But during our stay this time, 2 points would like to raise: 1. During our continuous stay, the quality of matcha powder seem quite strange and unlike the usual one. And the housekeeping NEVER refill the matcha powder on cleaning the room. Also happen to the cups. We understand that we stay at Dormy Inn express but never happen to us before that cups are not clean every time and refill matcha power every time on housekeeping. 2. Please include one more rubbish bin for sanitary items. It is quite uncomfortable to drop some sanitary items into the living room rubbish bin. Other than that, we really enjoy our stay.

    My first choice at Koriyama

We stayed 3 nights at April 2018. This stay was quite short than our stay at last yeat (7 nights at 2017). It doesn't mean something wrong. Just because we need catch the most beautiful time of Cherry Blossom. Get back to Dormy Inn, they actually put effort on maintain the quality of services and experience of guests during their stay. I stayed some Dormy Inn in other cities in Japan. They would make you feel familiar, comfort and feeling safe. Some say, chains of hotel like Dormy Inn made you boring, but when you are visitors in other countries, if you can find a place you familiar, it is a good things. At least for us. We stay at Japanese style room this time. And the space is really large. Although it is located at the corner of the building, the noise from outdoors was not significant. We are happy our stay.

My favorite Japanese chain for mid-priced accomodations

The Dormy Inn is a chain that delivers great amenities for the very value conscious traveler. All Dormy's that I have stayed in have a hot tub spa, late night noodles and a breakfast buffet. The rooms aren't the largest, as most places in Japan but it is always laid out well, efficient and optimal use of space. You will always get a lounge wear, slippers where you can roam the premises and for the frequent traveler, laundry facilities so that you don't have to pack a ton of clothes. The Dormy Inns are always in a convenient location very close to amenities, train stations so it is very accessible.
