comfortable hotel not four starWe were booked into this hotel by the concierge in Beijing. It was 5 minutes walk to the shore. Beach areas were about 10 to fifteen minutes either way. It was fairly central to the railway station and the shopping area. Rooms were comfortable and had the usual amenities. There are few amenities in the hotel. Never saw the 'gift shop' open. Buffet breakfast was okay, there is a much fuller meal available. There is a coffee bar downstairs. We went in the first day and had coffee. You get it white with sugar. I tried too get mine without but it seems it only comes the one way. We tried for a beer one evening and she handed us an unopened bottle, I assume to take to the room. I never saw anyone else use this facility. We went to the Ocean Elite on the street by the shore. It has western dishes and beer etc. I think pricey for China. Just outside the Dongfang hotel there is a Chinese cafe, very basic with tables and chairs. Beer was from the barrel and was about 20p a glass!! Not much English spoken, I think the staff speak Japanese, as this is their main clientele. Staff were friendly enough and helpful. quindao is a very nice quiet spot , at this time of the year. a welcome break from the big cities

IF ONLY THEY SPOKE MORE ENGLISHI have been staying at Dongfang hotel in Qingdao since the year 2007 and realise that its a good value for money. However I wish they spoke a little more English to help business travellers like us. I have been going back to this hotel for the last 6-8 times in the 3 years or so just because of its great location and value for money.Often I had to stay for 10-15 days at a stretch due to work but never got tired or fed up with the hotel. However a few more staff members knowing English do help us business travellers with our small but urgent queries. Sometimes I carry Chinese translated phrases with the help of my SIngapore office colleague to help me out in China. The food spread is good, the rooms are big and the staff is always smiling - whether they understand English or not.

Disappointing, outdatedThis is a clean, modest hotel near the beach in the older part of Qingdao. My room was the smallest of any on a four-city tour. While individual staff were capable and friendly, the overall management of the hotel was old-fashioned and complacent. The facilities were worn. Light fixtures and A/C did not work well. The shower and sink never produced hot water. At one point, the toilet failed to work. There was no wifi in the hotel, and the business center was a single laptop locked in a closet. The hotel had the look and feel of a place that has gotten by on its reputation and has motive to upgrade. It does not deserve the 4-star rating given by Trip Advisor. Friends in Qingdao definitely told me they could find a much better hotel for the same rate when I return.

Great location and value hotelStayed four nights at Qindao Dongfang Hotel in June of 2012 and we were very pleased with our choice. Hotel staffs were friendly and helpful. We booked in advance and got the special price. Our room is spacious and clean with two beds. Bathroom size is also very good. We have view of city and far away beach line. Beds were firm and comfortable, bedding sheets were cleaning. The amenities provided in the room were: shampoo and condition, tooth brush set, shower cap, comb and hair dryer, bathrobes and slippers, electric kettle and tea bags, small fridge and safe. There was free (wired) Internet access in the room. The buffet breakfast was included in the price. A wide variety of food choices and they tasted okay. There is also a dining place serving Dim Sum style of breakfast, but you have to pay for it. This hotel is in a good location, very close to top Qingdaos attractions, such as Number One Bathing Beach, Zhan Bridge just to name few. It only takes 5 minutes walk to get to the shore. There are many bus stops in front of hotel and making easy excess to go anywhere if you can read Chinese. Hotel has taxi-calling service; we paid 10CNY to go to the railway station.

Great location...between the old town and new CBD, the Ocean University of China and the beaches. Slightly old-fashioned decoration, but the equipments and Internet service are great, staff accomodating, and the price very reasonable for (otherwise expensive) Qingdao. In a nutshell: value for money!
