If you must stay here, use a credit card you trust, do not pay cash, and check the billI booked seven nights in this hotel, but cancelled after learning directly from their staff that my Cambodian wife would not be allowed her own key. Their tone and attitude was amazing, so I found another hotel. But the cancellation was ignored, and I was charged all seven nights as a no-show(!) Happily, Bank of America seems to believe me - we have a 30-year relationship and I have almost never challenged a credit card bill. So, with the charge-back, no loss. If you must stay here, do not pay cash until you have seen the room, do not use a credit card unless you trust the bank ... better still find a hotel you can trust. Lao people are typically very honest, and Vientiane is replete with far better hotels - at better prices. Otherwise, do not use the safe in the room, check your final bill, etc.

Don Chan PrisonWe spent three nights at the Don Chan Palace and I would not recommend this as a place to stay. The hotel is located just outside of Vientianne, it overlooks an empty derelict lot close to the Mekong. It is a large hotel, built in 2004 with over 200 rooms. It is the primary ( and possibly only) large scale conference centre in Laos. The location is an issue, there is no pedestrian access in and out of the hotel, you have to walk a convoluted route to get to the main shops. Although for $10US they will drive you. ( which is expensive by local standards), there are not much in the way of amenities around the hotel, so you are kind of stranded away from the action. The hotel is primarily used as a transit point and overnight stay for Chinese tourist groups, it was fairy evident that the hotel was not looking for repeat business. Check in was easy, quick and efficient. In fact engagement with all staff was always pleasant and helpful. No complaints there, they did their best with what they had. We were on the 7th floor, looking out over the Mekong, the room was a standard comfortable size, if not looking a little tired and in need of renovation. The bed, oh my goodness, the bed was simply horrible. It was rock hard. I like a firm mattress, but this was ridiculous. It was so hard at times it hurt. I think a park bench would have been more comfortable. The wifi was terrible, it was patchy, often drop out for long periods and when you asked for IT support the modem would be switched on and off and there would be a shrug of shoulders. Then it would drop again. No English TV channels available. So jet lag at 3am was fun, a crap bed, no wifi and no TV! At one point I got out of the bed and tried to sit on the chairs only to discover they too were rock hard and my backside has padding! Imagine being skinny? The breakfast buffet ( $12US) was ok, not flash and not terrible, enough to get you started in the day, but had unsurprisingly a very strong Chinese leaning if that is to your taste. ( deep fried duck beaks anyone?) The pool and gym were on the 4th floor, when we wanted to go for a swim, staff insisted we shower first ( which we had done an hour before so it really was not necessary) and insisted we abide by the rules of wearing a swimming cap. We are middle aged men, my husband is bald. It is not the hair on our heads that you need to worry about! The caps were too small for our large western heads and we gave up. The gym looked well equipped but i did not use it. ( told you, middle aged men!) There was a general lack of care on the premises, there was an abandoned bus parked in front of the hotel, we joked that it was a form of post apocalyptic landscape gardening, if it was, it was very well done. I try to not end negatively, so what else did i like? My husband informs me the toothbrushes provided were of excellent quality and they also had good thick toilet paper. Let's not forget the staff, they were kind, friendly and helpful, but good grief where they are working needs some management and care.

nice view on vientiane - a bit off the city centerI was staying there for about three nights on a business trip. Service was ok. Breakfast is catering for Chinese taste. The room had a very nice view on Vientiane. At the same time the Hotel is a bit off the city center.

Decent room but noise problem and only suitable for chinese customersWe stayed here for 2 nights while attending a conference in the city. The room was decent although the bed was very hard and poor quality, definitely not a pocket sprung. mattress. The hotel was not really 5 star more like 3 or 4 star. The hotel is totally geared up for the mainly Chinese customers who stay here,For example there were 24 Chinese channels on the tv but not one in English. Also the food is designed for Chinese taste. We were disturbed by loud music on one night, which seemed to be coming from the hotels own adjacent conference centre, the hotel staff were totally unhelpful and unwilling to do anything about this. So I wouldnt recommend this hotel because of potential noise problems and because of the hotels total dedication to the Chinese customers, there are hotels with more consideration for western visitors.

Not a place I recommendLarge, decent room with a beautiful view of the Mekong. But a mattress as hard as a plank of wood, air conditioning barely working, dark lighting with 5W bulbs, the lack of hot water in the bathroom, and the loud noise from the road below made my 14 days stay unpleasant. This was reinforced by very, very basic food, always the same at each meal, with poor quality products (tasteless meat, sometimes giving the impression of eating cardboard). Don't hope to have any reduction, or gift, even small. I broke a glass and I was asked to pay 6 $ to replace it (the real cost is 0,8$). However, at the same time, I paid 910$ for my stay. I was there in a particular context, since I did about forty when I entered Laos. So my comments on the food do not relate to the restaurants at this hotel. But this is a hotel that I would not go back to and that I do not recommend
