An oasis from BambergWe were warmly welcomed on arrival, checked in and found our room. It could have done with being a little bit larger for us, but that was probably due to the fact that we were carrying too much luggage. The weather was warm, so on the two nights we were there we were eating outside in the garden. Food was good, and equally, breakfast the following morning was varied and plentiful. Although the wi fi was free, it wasn't very good.... quite slow and intermittent, but that was our only 'complaint'. There is plenty free car parking available on site. The village is about a ten/fifteen minute drive from Bamberg, which was the reason for staying at this hotel in the first place; we visited there on a Sunday morning, which made parking easy, but I would guess that on any other day it might be a nightmare!

Small town hotel with some issuesSince all hotels in Bamberg were full, we decided to stay in nearby Stegaurach. The hotel is located only a few miles from downtown Bamberg. Having a car is almost a must in this case as the bus connection to town is running only once per hour. On the upside the hotel has access to plenty of parking spaces and there is a small indoor pool and sauna. On the downside the owner/staff are unfriendly to downright rude. After getting to our room I noticed that there was no WiFi signal. I therefore asked the owner if we could change rooms to one that is located closer to the router, but that was declined with the reason that everyone had already checked in and since the hotel was full, there was no alternative room available. This turned out to be a blatant lie by the owner as, serving the web in the lobby area, I witnessed at least four other couples checking in after us. Another couple traveling with us was staying directly across the router but their connection was also very weak to non-existant. So expext to have to do any internet work in the lobby. Also the information provided on check-in is very limited. We had to return to the lobby repeatedly to find out how to open the room door with the strange plastic key or what the internet password was. This is an issue as the lobby is frequently not occupied and no one responded to the bell ringing. Rooms were rather small but the beds were okay with nice linens. There are very few bathroom amenities. Only liquid soap and a shower cap were provided. The grout in the shower stall was partially moldy, so there are some cleanliness issues. Also the lower part of the shower stall fell apart as I was opening the shower door showing some maintenance deficienies. Breakfast was okay (about average by German standards) but the bread provided was not fresh and hard. The restaurant is way oberpriced as compared to the establishments in Bamberg. One would expect this to be the other way around but the hotel apparently preys on people with no car or people that do not want to drive after dinner. Given the high pricing of this place and the poor service, I would not recommend to stay there.

Very good place to stay!We were in the Bamberg area visiting family. Der Krug afforded us the ability to easily access Bischberg and Bamberg for visits to family homes and apartments since it is positioned well for us. We noted the slow internet but solved the problem in mere seconds by using our Cell phones as a hotspot. Since internet access has almost no priority for us this aspect of the stay has no impact on the rating we are giving. What is most important is the rooms are clean, the beds are comfortable, and nights are quiet. The food was excellent and the staff friendly and helpful. Services and accommodations deserve a superior rating. I would recommend Der Krug based solely on our experiences but it's the intangibles that one appreciates the most. Driving "Durch die Doerfer" reminded me of inherent charm of old world villages and the history preserved in so many places in Bayern. Norman and Tammie Alexander

Great Bavarian guest houseI stayed here for a business trip to visit Thomann - the largest music store in Europe. Totally enjoyed the stay. I drove a rental car from Frankfurt (2 hours) and after visiting Thomann drove around to a Bamberg, Altenberg Castle and many cathedrals that were over 1000 years old. Food in this area was awesome and people very friendly. The guest house was comfortable and clean, and breakfast was only 7 Euros and was wonderful. One of my favorite hotels during my 2 week trip to Germany.
