    Surprise

That hotel was a surprise for me , because I didn't expect to find such a modern place in Karaman (because Karaman is not a big and touristic city as fas as I know). Hotel is new, rather chic,( may be a little kitsch )best choice in Karaman. Rooms are average, breakfast is not perfect but good.

    Cultural disaster

First, I am an experienced traveler and retired foreign affairs specialist, so my attitudes towards other cultures and religions are pretty flexible. I am writing this on my wife's TripAdvisor account. Our experience at this hotel requires lengthy comment. At check-in with our traveling partners, the manager on duty, a nice English-speaking young man, described the "spa" that the hotel advertises - steamroom, hamam, salt room, dry sauna, and swimming pool - the reason we picked this particular hotel well into a 2600KM driving trip (during which we slept in 26 different beds). The spas were separate - one side for men, one for women - as is customary there. He then said that the pools on both sides were under maintenance, which was disappointing, but we looked forward to the steamroom, hamam, salt room, and dry sauna. The first guest room we were shown - despite being stated on the reservation as nonsmoking - was clearly a smoking room. This required a move away from our friends to another room down the hall. We then discovered it was a very conservative hotel - despite Turkey being a secular state no alcohol was available in this 5 star hotel. They offered to bring beer in from outside but I sensed that was not a popular option for them. We went out and bought our own - problem solved. Next we decided to go to the "spa." The women went first. When they prepared to move from the dry sauna into the hamam, they discovered two young men dawdling around the pool area ostensibly working but in reality trying to get a look at the two western women in bathing suits as they moved between the sauna and the hamam. They complained to a young girl on duty who had to ask the boys THREE times to leave (a male attendant sat at his desk). What the heck were men doing in the women's exclusive side anyway while women were using the spa? I then came down and noted that there was a barrier across the women's entrance - finally (I did not know what had just occurred). I went to the men's side and discovered, as had my wife on the women's side, that while the dry sauna and the hamam worked, the salt room and the steamroom were out of order. When I brought this to the attention of the male attendant (large guy with long hair fiddling with his computer) he told me that the salt room wasn't supposed to be heated (which, having lived in Germany and used public baths constantly, I knew was wrong). So then they sent THE YOUNG LADY into the men's side with me (I was the only man) to try and get the sauna reset - unsuccessfully. I eventually left in disgust and noted that there was now a more senior manager in a suit at the spa desk who looked at me but said nothing. I observed the two "poolboys" playing pingpong and having a great time. When I returned to the room my wife told me her experience. I went down to the desk and complained to the nice young man about the treatment of my wife and her friend, ESPECIALLY in a hotel like this. Much surprise, taking of notes and a phone call made to the spa at which time I noticed the more senior manager return from the spa and slip into his office with no comment, despite the fact he must have known what this was all about. At no time before checkout the next morning did either my wife or I receive any sort of apology for something that if it occurred to the sister or mother of any of the male employees at this hotel, would have not been tolerated. My takeaway was that western women (whose husbands had already asked if beer was available) were fair game for the teenagers who wished to ogle them at the spa and there would be no repercussions, at least none that we were ever made aware of. Let alone placing me in the position of being alone with a young woman (wearing a headscarf, I should add) on the men's side of the spa, which is not a good position to be in in that part of Turkey. I guess this hotel is only conservative when it comes to alcohol. I should also add that when we asked for a restaurant recommendation where we might get an Efes beer with dinner, they sent us - I think on purpose - to what was really a men's pub, the Orkide. If so, the joke was on them because the owner was very glad to see us - although our wives were the only two women there and were subject to much staring by the other patrons, all men between 30 and 70 (again, had I done this to their wives or daughters I would have been in a lot of trouble). Much picking up of cellphones and calling people while staring. The owner made quite a fuss over us, picked excellent food from the menu and served us a local wine of very good quality. Since my wife is from Oklahoma City, he even asked us to return the next night to watch the Oklahoma City Thunder basketball team on TV! The next morning we checked out of the hotel as quickly as possible. No apologies from the manager at checkout. I would say that I would never stay in this hotel again, but since it's very unlikely in any event....My point in all this is that I respect your beliefs but it was clear that being Americans we weren't welcome and courtesies extended to Turkish women (and by the way, there was a massive women's conference there the next day) were not going to be extended to western women. Completely unacceptable.

    Undistinguished

To my experience and understanding this hotel is not capable of 4 star quality, at least in the practice (since I am not interested what is written on the plate). Mine was a 6-7 days-long business trip to the region, thus I believe I had enough of the ambience to make objective comments. Pros: - Attentive personnel (but.... [have a look at the cons for the 'BUT']). They are kind. - Clean. Cons: - Personnel lack capacity of properly listening, understanding and bringing out solutions to simple requests. They always have simple excuses including "it ran out" or "we do not..." etc. - This hotel is operated as a daily stop by motel for domestic pensioners who are visiting the region with tours. Thus things -especially eating- are arranged on this basis. If there is a group of 15 senior ladies, then you have the open buffet dinner, if not you must stick to the menu of the day which is only one main dish with no alternative. - Eatings are obviously on the cheaper side, meaning that most dishes based on chicken or turkey which was unpleasant for me. Or having the same semolina cake on the table for three days in a row with different toppings, etc. - They really want to keep things cheap and the customer profile seems very much ok with that, then you realize there is no need for improving. Well... - The eating facility is at the basement floor (-1) and it is not a hall with walls, it is the opening in the middle of the building where all 4 floors and rooms face. Thus you listen to plates and forks till 22:00, or hear every single above average noise in your room. - Difficult to find a real non-smoking room. Some rooms are already soaked with cigarette smell, and especially in the late evenings a tiny but very annoying smoke smell was filling my room; probaby caused by the neighbouring rooms and the central ventilation system. - Spa: I have never been there. My colleagues warned me to not to. Their complaint was that the sauna was tuned to 60 degrees celcius, and the salt room was just room temperature. Afterwards I have read similar complaints from the reviews here. Conclusion: If you are okay with the things above this hotel can be considered for a few days stay with the concept of bed & breakfast, other than that you might find many disappointments for a 4* hotel. They have spent money on kitsch plastic and led decorations everywhere but they are not eager to follow some international standards. No alcohol exist at the hotel, which is a minus for me, but I did not include it in the cons. That is not a very expensive hotel, and considering the size of the town and the social background of the region it is not that bad for B&B purposes.

    Disaster

There was only two coices to stay in Karaman but unfortunately I've chosen Demosan. Hotel is dirty, sheets are dirty, room are dirty. When you entered the hotel you can find out what is cooking in the kitchen. Minibar is empty, alcohol is forbidden. Breakfast was scandal. It is interesting but the meeting facilities were quite good. I'll never ever stay at this hotel. By the way, don't use the lobby toilettes!!! I complained about 2 times but nothing changed. They should remove their starts because no one can say that this hotel has 4 starts.
