Smelled of Weed, Poor Service, but Good Restaurant

Booked a Marriott Rewards stay for a 2-night Lake Michigan get away. Received a luke warm greeting at our 7PM check in, and was told service to room would be limited due to COVID. I asked about dining availability, and was told restaurant was open for dinner only and if I wanted breakfast or lunch that there were plenty of other options in the downtown area. Upon stepping off 8th floor elevator for my room, was hit by the pungent smell of marijuana. My room was near the elevator (against my Marriott member preference on file), and I opened door to room & found it to be clean; however, there were no coffee pods, supplies, cups, or a single glass/cup anywhere in the room, and the smell of weed from the hallway slightly permeated into the room. I went back to the front desk, asked for coffee supplies and cups, and informed the associate that the 8th floor badly smelled of weed, to which she said "We know, we're looking into it. We'll deliver coffee supplies to your room. If you want a glass, ask the restaurant." At this point, I was so disappointed with the lack of service and the high level of apathy and/or poor training, I jumped on Trip Advisor to explore finding another place to stay while my friend and I went to dinner at the lobby restaurant. The restaurant turned out to be the highlight of the stay with excellent food and fantastic service by bartender/server Jessica and her colleague (sorry, didn't catch his name). It was now after 9PM, so we decided to stay one of the 2 booked nights, and we asked if we could take the water glasses to the room. Next day, we found only one cafe open for breakfast about 5 blocks from hotel (Not exactly "plenty of other options" nearby.) At this point, we decided to enjoy the Pere Marquette beach, come back to the room to change, then depart for a new hotel (Harbor House Inn in Grand Haven, which was EXCELLENT by the way). Upon checking out at the Delta after 1 night of my 2 night "reward" reservation, the associate stated "You're checking out a day early?" to which I simply said yes, and she didn't care enough (or wasn't trained well enough) to ask why that might have been the case. I'm a long time Marriott elite member, and as noted, this was a reward stay. As part of the Marriott umbrella, I expected better of this facility. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this hotel, except for the restaurant.

Dont judge a book by its cover

From outside the establishment does not appear very appealing; however the rooms have been renovated and the bathrooms are state of the art (kohler fixtures). The furniture is new, the beds are very comfortable, rooms are fairly large and very clean, staff is very accommodating, location is great and the rates are very affordable. I wish the pool was opened but that is due to Covid. We stayed for one night with four kids on sixth floor.

    Very impressive.

My spouse and I decided to take a random overnight getaway to downtown Muskegon on a Wednesday in September 2020 while on a stay-cation from our jobs. Neither of us had ever stayed at a Delta Hotel before, and I specifically wanted to stay at this property because it's located in the heart of downtown Muskegon. Altogether, I was very impressed. Very modern-looking property with a lobby and amenities (including the furnishings in the room) that seemed to have been recently renovated. Our check-in process went smoothly. Our room (#705) was clean and comfortable. We slept well. No complaints at all. I appreciated the fact that parking was free. We decided to have dinner at the restaurant on site, Walker's. I'll probably write a separate restaurant review for that, but we were quite satisfied with the food and the ambience. The indoor pool and hot tub on the 2nd floor looked very inviting, but unfortunately it was closed due to the COVID pandemic. We want to visit Muskegon again sometime after the pandemic is over. Hopefully the pool will be opened at that time. This property also has a business center with a couple of computers in the lobby that guests can use, but unfortunately, the Internet must have been down because those computers were not available during our stay. (Normally that's something that might cause my overall rating to drop, but I'm still giving this property 5 stars because overall, it was excellent.) For anyone who likes Starbucks, there is a Starbucks located inside the hotel... near the restaurant and bar. All in all, I loved this place and look forward to staying here again after the pandemic is over.

Excellent Property for a Downtown Location

Was not sure being a downtown location, but this was an excellent location to stay. Clean and staff very accommodating. I was on the 7th floor, room was clean and in excellent condition. Decided to have dinner there and the food was excellent as well. If I come back in the area again, this will be my go to place to stay.

    Love this hotel

The hotels interior is beautiful/feels like it belongs in a Chicago or New York. The lobby, hallways, room, and even the fitness center were super clean - which made me feel safe. Walkers American Brasserie is my new favorite restaurant. I love the big city feel from the service to the ambiance and food. I was there during the week and still a fun, good all around vibe. Definitely a must experience while in Muskegon!
