  Lovely stay but.....

  We were delighted to be able to book De Oude Opstal as it had wonderful reviews and a four star tourism rating. Our hosts were superb - welcoming, warm and helpful. Breakfast was delicious, the room was delightful and it should have been the perfect stay. But it wasn't - because despite their best efforts, our lovely hosts are not the owners, they are house sitting, and they simply cannot be expected deliver a service guests expect from a four star property. For instance, the swimming pool is unusable - green - because the owner has neglected it. The garden is showing signs it is not as loved as it has been in the past, and the maintenance of the property is quite simply under par. Walls are cracking, paintwork is tired and there are obvious cut backs in the extras which make a place like this special. It's not for me to guess the circumstances of the fading standards of this place, but it certainly doesn't deserve its four star rating. It is nothing whatsoever to do with the work and effort put in by the housesitters and everything to do with lack of attention and investment from the owner.

  Attractive exterior in need of some TLC

  We were staying overnight en route to another destination. Robertson itself does not seem to have much to boast about! The attractive thatched roof house is safely behind electric gates. There was plenty of car parking. We stayed in the Mountain View Room upstairs via a separate outside staircase with a metal security gate, and outside patio. We had kitchen facilities and kettle etc in our room. We only had hot drinks as we went out to eat. There was a strange blue shower cubicle in the bathroom. It worked adequately however despite appearances. The bed was very comfortable. The property clearly needs some maintenance in places. We were recommended a couple of local restaurants for dinner. Our breakfast was included and freshly cooked to order by the owner and his wife who were very friendly and offered us different options for our cooked breakfast. We helped ourselves to cereal and fruit from the sideboard. We had a walk around the extensive gardens (which needed a lot of TLC in places) that surrounded the house. There was a swimming pool which did not look very inviting the water was very green in fact I would say it is unusable.

  Wonderful first visit Robertson

  Host Henk was the perfect host for first time visitors. Gave solid advice on the area. Breakfast very good and great time for sharing The old building is fascinating(one of the oldest in the town and very quiet, peaceful and safe Will definitely be back when in the area

  My favourite place to stay in Robertson

  Having been here twice, I definitely wouldn't stay anywhere else in Robertson. Henk & Mardi Botha are excellent hosts, the period house is set in a spacious & quiet garden and it's also convenient located. The large bedroom had a good shower room and fast WiFi. Breakfasts are excellent. If you're interested in visiting any of the wine estates, Henk is extremely knowledgeable & helpful. Thoroughly recommended!
