Expensive but an experience! We stayed here for 1 night because we couldnt afford more than that. But it was an interesting experience. Our rooms were in the south building and looked newer. We chose a Japanese style tatami room. The bath area is very large with many bath options for various minerals or level of heat. Theres also a regular pool area that our kids liked for the slide. Bath areas feel very retro but it was still cool to sit in a hot spring outside with snow on the ground. The dinner and breakfast buffets were amazing and we loved it.

A great way to end our holidayWas here for the last 2 nights of our 10 day Hokkaido trip. Booked the west wing Japanese style room given that its the closest to the onsen. Read the reviews and knew ahead its the oldest wing of the hotel and not renovated. So our expectations were not high. The room were as reviewed not much to mention but decently clean. Toilet has a weird smell though but didnt bother us too much as we only used it to brush our teeth. We used the onsen toilet for all other purposes. Buffet breakfast and dinner was sumptuous! Infact its prob the best in our entire trip. Food is repetitive though so I wouldnt recommend staying more than 2 nights unless u dont mind the same spread everyday. The onsen is huge! Despite the size of the hotel, I dont feel crowded the few times I was there. Horse oil toiletries were provided at every shower station. Check out was a breeze and we took a bus from the hotel to the airport. Bus station is just a 3 min walk away and more efficient and economical than having to transfer to the subway.

Self-contained resortThe original Takimotokan pioneered the hot springs in Noboribetsu, which explains its prime location right by the Jigokudani. (Despite this, none of the rooms face Hell Valley; only the onsen complex does, so if you are looking for a view, you're out of luck.) The resort has grown and grown over the years, and is now made up of a number of buildings within a sprawling complex. We stayed at the newly renovated East Wing, which is just a few steps from the lobby. (The West Wing has since started its renovations, which means that the bulk of the hotel's rooms would be renewed by the end of this year.) The superior twin room was conveniently located on a floor with direct access to the dinner and breakfast venues. Lots of wood accents used within, and with a serene view out into a quiet internal garden, which was beautifully covered in snow in winter. We liked that the toilet is separate from the washroom/shower. Parking is included, but outdoors, spread over various lots surrounding the hotel. If you arrive early, you get to park at the nearest one, which is still across the street about 50-metres away. As many have mentioned before, the main draw of the place is the massive onsen complex at the far end of the resort. Dozens of ofuro, some outdoor (rotenburo), with different types of spring water, some with iron, some with sulphur, all clearly marked so that you can try out the different ones. They purportedly bring different health benefits. There is also a swimming pool (a rarity in Japan). Lots of other amusements in the hotel, like a 9-metre tall automaton that performs every 30-60 mins during the day, a bunch of restaurants and bars, a game arcade and the quintessential souvenir shop the size of a small department store. You can spend the entire day here and not get bored. The downside of the hotel is that it can get very busy. The fact that there is a dedicated check in area for bus tours with its own driveway hints that the establishment is geared towards the masses. As a result of this, the service here can be hit or miss, with some staff obviously jaded by having to deal with guests unused to Japanese culture. This goes a little way in explaining some of the 1 or 2 star reviews below. But if you keep expectations in check, it won't be a bad stay. To be honest, we prefer a quieter ryokan, but the Takinoya was sold out on the dates we were in Noboribetsu.

Onsen Paradise Hotel ReviewThis hotel is located just beside the entrance to the Jikokudani and is around 5 mins walk from the bus station crossing the onsen street. As I am travelling solo, thus the room I could get is western room and it looks like recently renovated. My room plan also included Japanese Kaiseki dinner which is good and buffet breakfast in the morning. Note that the hotel offer other room plan too, such as Japanese room with dinner serving in a restaurant or in room. There are also plan for buffet dinner too. Even without meal plan for your room, the hotel does have other restaurants or you could always find something at the onsen street. This hotel has a very big onsen bath overlooking the Jikokudani: Grand Bath with 5 different spring waters and a total of 35 different baths for male and female, indoor and outdoor. There is also a pool for kids under the grand bath. For onsen lover, this is indeed an onsen paradise, which I have spent about 1 hr+ X 2 visits! This is definitely a great hotel for onsen lover!

It's all about the onsen!En route to the Sapporo snow festival we stopped here based on guide book recommendations for the onsen. It is brilliant and worth the convenience of being able to wander to it from your room whenever you like. We found the hotel itself to be good value - staff friendly and helpful, room clean and tidy (and spacious - but we did book a superior Japanese room) and the hotel food varied and tasty. We booked the evening buffet which was a great way to try a range of Japanese dishes at 'low risk' and the range was huge - well worth the extra. Breakfast was equally large and we stoked up for the day. Hell's valley was just around the corner - indeed you can look up the valley from the men's onsen! Yes it is more expensive than other accommodation in the area but we thought worth the extra for a one night stopover.
